Product Description
Granny OX Square is a variation of the squares Crosses and Noughts using the traditional granny square which makes it easier for a beginner. When I designed Crosses and Noughts I had several other similar designs in my head and this was was one of them. So I have produced the full pattern for this.
It was designed for double knit yarn or aran weight yarn but any weight could be used. In double knit weight yarn used in the sample, approx 50g is required and the resultant size is 25cm/10” square. In aran weight yarn using a 5mm hook, the finished size is 30cm/12” square but it is a flexible design where you can add or remove rounds to get the size you want.

What is Being Made
The Granny OX Square is a modular crochet project composed of four small squares that are joined together and then bordered to create one larger finished square. This design offers flexibility in final dimensions through repeatable border rounds, making it suitable for various project sizes and applications. The construction method eliminates the need for sewing, as squares are joined as you go using slip stitches into spaces on adjacent squares.
Construction Technique
This pattern employs a join-as-you-go technique, a popular method in modular crochet design that streamlines the finishing process. Rather than completing all individual squares separately and then sewing them together, this approach integrates the joining process directly into the crochet work by slip stitching into spaces on adjacent squares. Once the four small squares are joined, a border is worked around the perimeter of the larger square. The border design is repeatable, allowing crafters to work additional rounds until reaching their desired finished size.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. Slip stitches are employed for the join-as-you-go joining method. A chart is provided with the pattern instructions to guide stitchers through the small square construction, ensuring proper stitch placement and sequence. The specific stitch abbreviations follow UK crochet terminology, with US equivalents provided for reference.
Yarn and Hook Specifications
- DK Weight Yarn: Recommended with a 4mm crochet hook, producing a finished square of approximately 25cm (10 inches) and using around 50g of yarn in total
- Aran Weight Yarn: Recommended with a 5mm crochet hook, producing a finished square of approximately 30cm (12 inches)
Design Flexibility
The Granny OX Square accommodates both monochromatic and multi-color colorwork approaches. The sample shown uses two colors, demonstrating the design's versatility for creative color combinations. This flexibility makes the pattern suitable for stash-busting projects or coordinated color schemes.
