Grand View Pullover Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Grand View is an advanced-level knitted pullover sweater designed by BeckyinVT for Sugar Tree Designs. This garment features a classic gansey construction with traditional styling elements. The sweater is available in nine sizes, ranging from 28.75 inches to 60.75 inches bust circumference, making it suitable for a wide range of body types. The pullover showcases a sophisticated blend of stitch patterns and traditional knitting techniques that appeal to experienced knitters seeking a timeless, elegant garment.
Construction Technique
The Grand View is constructed using a bottom-up method, beginning with a traditional gansey cast on. The hem and body are worked in the round using circular needles, which creates a seamless construction and ensures consistent fabric throughout the main body section. After reaching the appropriate length, the pattern includes a divide that separates the front and back sections for continued shaping. This construction method is characteristic of gansey sweaters, a classic knitting tradition that produces garments with exceptional durability and a refined appearance.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Grand View incorporates multiple stitch patterns to create visual interest and texture:
- Seed stitch is used as a primary stitch pattern, worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 40 rows per 4-inch square
- Diamond pattern provides decorative detailing, worked at a gauge of 25 stitches and 40 rows per 4-inch square
These stitch combinations create a sophisticated fabric with both textural depth and visual dimension, characteristic of traditional gansey design.
Materials and Yardage Requirements
The Grand View is designed to be worked in Grand View Farm Romney Wool Yarn, a 100% wool yarn in DK weight. The yarn is offered in a Natural Gray colorway. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 943 yards for the smallest size to 2,243 yards for the largest size. Specific skein quantities are provided for each size option, ranging from 4 skeins for the smallest size to 9 skeins for the largest sizes.
Needles and Notions
This pattern requires the following tools and notions:
- US4 (3.5 mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge
- US2 (2.75 mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles, which are two sizes smaller than the larger needles, typically used for ribbed sections
- 8 stitch markers, including 1 unique marker designated for marking the end of round
- Grand View Cable needle by Becky Herrick for cable work
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Difficulty Level
The Grand View is rated as an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with in-the-round construction, multiple stitch patterns, and garment shaping techniques. The combination of seed stitch and diamond pattern work, along with traditional gansey construction methods, requires solid foundational knitting skills and the ability to manage multiple stitches on circular needles.
