Product Description
As much as I love all the wonderful creatures inhabiting the worlds’ dry lands, I am even more fascinated by Earths’ magical watery worlds and their colorful inhabitants. Here is a way to dive into the enchanting and spectacularly splashy underwater world, without even getting your feet wet!
The squid and conch were made on 2 mm double pointed needles: the squid (16 cm) in a lace gauged (mohair) yarn and the conch (10 cm) in fine gauged yarn. The inner shell can be done in miniature or on thicker needles in heavier yarn (both options described).
Only small amounts of yarns are needed, so these are great projects to use up any scraps you have lying around.
**The glitter squid actually GLOWS IN THE DARK!**Just adding a strand of luminescent sewing yarn to your knit, will do the trick.
This is an easy, fast project with some color work, short rows, I-cords and bobble stitches (explained in the pattern)
Enjoy your knit (and squid)!
Glitter Squid and Cute Conch Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern from AnimalKnitdom features two aquatic-themed projects: a glitter squid inspired by the bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) and a complementary cute conch. The glitter squid design captures the magical essence of these real Pacific and Indian Ocean creatures, which naturally change colors and patterns through light-reflecting cells called chromatophores. This knitting pattern allows crafters to create their own glimmering, gleaming squid with glow-in-the-dark properties, paired with an adorable conch companion piece.
Techniques and Construction Methods
These projects are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The patterns utilize small-scale needlework appropriate for creating detailed aquatic creatures. The squid design emphasizes creating a characteristic auroral, flitty appearance through careful yarn selection and construction methods. The pattern accommodates different needle sizes and yarn weights, allowing crafters to adjust the final size of their finished pieces based on their material choices and skill preferences.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates lace gauge stitching, which creates the delicate, shimmering quality essential to capturing the glitter squid's ethereal aesthetic. Lace knitting techniques are employed to achieve the light, airy construction that gives these creatures their distinctive appearance.
