Ginkgophyte Lace T-Shirt by Emily Greene
What Is Being Made
Ginkgophyte is a relaxed, contemporary lace t-shirt designed by Emily Greene, featuring an abstracted ginkgo-leaf motif rendered in crisp lace eyelets. The garment showcases a drop-shoulder silhouette with a round neckline finished with a folded band trim, creating a breezy, unfussy aesthetic ideal for spring layering. The pattern offers versatility through two distinct sleeve options, allowing knitters to customize the finished piece to their preference and seasonal needs.
Garment Silhouette and Design Details
The Ginkgophyte features a relaxed, drop-shoulder construction that creates a contemporary, comfortable fit. The round neckline is finished with a folded band, providing a polished edge without excessive bulk. The design emphasizes ease of wear and movement, making it suitable for layering over lightweight bases or wearing as a standalone piece during warmer months.
Sleeve Options
- Short Sleeve Version: Features a rolled cuff finish, offering a casual, refined detail that complements the lace pattern and relaxed silhouette. Requires 880 to 1500 yards (805 to 1370 meters) depending on size.
- 3/4 Sleeve Version: A slim-fitting option that extends three-quarters down the arm, providing additional coverage while maintaining the garment's airy aesthetic. Requires 965 to 1615 yards (880 to 1005+ meters) depending on size.
Lace Pattern and Motif
The defining feature of Ginkgophyte is its abstracted ginkgo-leaf motif, executed through lace eyelets. This stitch technique creates openwork sections that form the botanical design, allowing light to pass through the fabric while maintaining structural integrity. The lace pattern is rendered in crisp, well-defined eyelets that showcase the delicate nature of the yarn and create visual interest across the garment's body and sleeves.
Knitting Techniques
Ginkgophyte is an intermediate-level knitting project that incorporates several fundamental techniques. The garment is worked from charts, requiring knitters to read lace stitch diagrams and execute eyelet decreases and yarn-overs with precision. The construction includes top-down or seamless assembly methods typical of contemporary knitwear design, with the drop-shoulder shaping achieved through strategic increases and decreases. The folded band neckline finish demonstrates intermediate finishing techniques, while the rolled cuff on the short sleeve version and the slim-fitted 3/4 sleeve option both require attention to gauge and shaping.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs lace eyelets as the primary decorative stitch, created through combinations of yarn-overs and decreases. These eyelets form the abstracted ginkgo-leaf design and contribute to the garment's drapey, breathable quality. Supporting stitches include stockinette stitch for the base fabric and ribbing for the neckline band and sleeve cuffs, providing structure and elasticity where needed.
Yarn and Materials
Ginkgophyte is designed for fingering weight yarn, specifically worked in Quince & Co. Tern, a soft and drapey yarn with a touch of silk content. The silk blend enhances the fabric's natural drape and creates a luxurious hand feel appropriate for a spring layering piece. Yarn requirements vary by size and sleeve option, ranging from 4 to 9 skeins for the short sleeve version and 5 to 9+ skeins for the 3/4 sleeve version. The fingering weight classification (approximately 4-ply) ensures that the lace eyelets remain crisp and well-defined while the silk content prevents the fabric from feeling heavy or stiff.
Pattern Contents and Format
This downloadable PDF pattern (Version 3, May 2023) includes comprehensive instructions for both sleeve variations. The pattern features a schematic for sizing reference, detailed written instructions, lace charts with a complete legend for symbol interpretation, and abbreviations for all techniques used. Multiple size options are provided, accommodating a range of body measurements and fit preferences.
Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements
Rated as an intermediate project, Ginkgophyte is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable reading charts, executing lace techniques, and managing garment construction. The lace eyelet pattern requires attention to stitch counts and the ability to troubleshoot dropped stitches, while the garment shaping demands understanding of increases, decreases
