Gingham & Lace Gloves by Terry Liann Morris

What is Being Made

These are delicate women's gloves featuring a sophisticated combination of lace and stranded knitting techniques. The design creates the visual effect of old-fashioned gingham fabric adorning the glove surface. The pattern is available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, making it suitable for various hand dimensions. The gloves are designed as a beginner-friendly knitting project, making them accessible to newer crafters while still offering visual interest and technique practice.

Techniques Used

The Gingham & Lace Gloves employ two primary knitting techniques to achieve their distinctive appearance:

  • Stranded Knitting: This colorwork technique involves carrying multiple yarn colors across rows to create the gingham patterning effect. Stranded knitting allows the crafter to work with multiple colors simultaneously, creating intricate patterns without cutting yarn.
  • Lace Knitting: Delicate lace elements are incorporated throughout the design, adding an elegant, feminine quality to the gloves. Lace knitting uses yarn overs and decreases to create openwork patterns.

The pattern provides both line-by-line written instructions and chart format for the lace and gingham patterns, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method of following the design.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, the design incorporates essential knitting stitches used in colorwork and lace construction. The gingham pattern is created through stranded colorwork, which relies on knit stitches worked with alternating colors. The lace sections utilize yarn overs and decreases, fundamental techniques in lace knitting that create the openwork aesthetic. Both written line-by-line instructions and charted formats are provided for these pattern sections.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The gloves require 200 yards total of fingering or baby weight yarn. The yarn is worked on US Size 1 (2.25mm) double point needles, which are appropriate for the fine gauge needed with fingering-weight yarn.

The yarn composition includes:

  • A main color (MC) requiring approximately 2 skeins
  • Three contrasting colors (A, B, and C) in small amounts for the gingham and lace elements

The sample gloves shown in the pattern were knit with Baby Ull by Dalegarn, a 100% washable wool yarn. The specific colorway used Baby Ull in light gray as the main color, with light pink and dark pink as contrasting colors for the gingham pattern, and creamy white for additional detail. Each skein of Baby Ull contains 50 grams and yields 175 meters, making it an ideal choice for this project.

Yarn Weight Specifications

This pattern is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, commonly referred to as fingering or baby weight in the knitting community. These fine yarn weights create the delicate fabric and precise colorwork necessary for the gingham and lace effects. The pattern recommends obtaining proper gauge with the specified needle size to ensure the gloves fit correctly.

Additional Supplies

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires 2 stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping throughout the knitting process.
