Product Description
Knit up a Gingerbread House for a festive treat. This pattern incorporates a two-colour trellis stitch to make the roof tiles. This is a squidgy house, but you can make a more structured version by cutting cardboard or plastic mesh pieces the same size as the knitted house pieces, and place these inside when you sew together. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the house is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round), and some of the decorative elements are i-cord which is worked on two DPNs. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, a little embroidery to decorate, and seaming to finish.

What is Being Made
This is a knitted gingerbread house project designed as a decorative or play piece. The structure is constructed using the knitting technique and is subsequently stuffed to create a three-dimensional form. The finished house features a detailed design with multiple color elements including brown walls, white trim, green roof sections, and red accents, creating a festive gingerbread aesthetic.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The gingerbread house is created by knitting individual pieces that are later seamed together and stuffed to form the complete structure. This approach allows for precise color work and shaping while maintaining the characteristic texture of knitted fabric.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern information provided, the project involves standard knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The construction process includes:
- Knitting individual components (walls, roof, door, and decorative elements)
- Seaming pieces together using a darning or tapestry needle
- Stuffing the completed structure with toy filling to achieve a three-dimensional form
- Attaching embellishments including buttons and ribbon using embroidery thread
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The gingerbread house pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting or light worsted weight, 8 ply). The recommended yarn is Hayfield Bonus DK, which is 100% acrylic. You will need up to a 100g skein in each of the following colors: Brown (Walnut shade), White, Dark Green (Grass shade), Light Green (Lime shade), and Red (Signal Red shade). A similar DK weight acrylic yarn can be substituted if the recommended brand is unavailable.
Needles and Tools Required
The pattern requires the following needles and notions:
- A pair of 3.5mm (US 4) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm
- A pair of 3.5mm (US 4) double-pointed needles (DPNs) with a minimum length of 10cm
- A darning or tapestry needle for seaming the knitted pieces
- A 200g bag of toy filling for stuffing
- A sewing needle and white embroidery thread for attaching buttons
- Pins for assembly and shaping during the making-up process
- A ruler or tape measure for measuring gauge and finished dimensions
Decorative Embellishments
The gingerbread house design includes several decorative elements to enhance its festive appearance:
- A red ribbon bow for decoration
- Red and green buttons in a variety of sizes to embellish the house
- Optional red and white twine for additional decorative detailing
- Optional 25cm pipe cleaner or chenille stem to strengthen the door frame
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the absolute beginner level. The intermediate classification reflects the color work involved, the multi-piece construction requiring seaming skills, and the assembly process needed to create the finished three-dimensional house.
