Gilet-Jacket in Garter-Stitch & Stocking-Stitch by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
This is a knitted gilet-jacket designed by Pat Menchini, a sleeveless layering piece suitable for casual wear. The garment is available in five size options ranging from 81/86 cm (32/34 inches) to 122/127 cm (48/50 inches) to fit various body measurements. The finished actual sizes span from 94 cm (37 inches) to 134 cm (53 inches), with a centre back length of approximately 62–65 cm (24½–25½ inches). The gilet-jacket features a button front closure with three buttons.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs two primary knitting techniques to create visual and textural interest. Garter-stitch is used throughout portions of the design, created by knitting every row to produce a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges on both sides. Stocking-stitch forms the main body fabric, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce the classic smooth, V-textured knit surface on the right side. The combination of these two stitches adds depth and dimension to the finished garment.
Stitches Used
- Garter-stitch (g-st): Every row is knitted, creating a bumpy, reversible fabric
- Stocking-stitch (st-st): Alternating knit and purl rows to form the primary smooth fabric
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch used throughout
- Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create stocking-stitch
Materials & Yarn Specifications
The Gilet-Jacket is designed to be knitted with Rico-Design Essential Alpaca Blend Print Chunky yarn in shade 003. This is a chunky-weight yarn, with each 50g ball providing 90 metres (98 yards) of yardage. Yarn requirements are approximate and vary by size: 7 balls for the smallest size (81/86 cm), increasing to 10 balls for the largest size (122/127 cm). A single pair of 6 mm (UK size 4, US size 10) knitting needles is required for the project.
Tension & Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 14 stitches and 19 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stocking-stitch using 6 mm needles. Testing tension before beginning is essential; if your tension is too loose, switch to finer needles, and if too tight, use larger needles. Matching the stated tension ensures the finished garment will fit as intended.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it suitable for knitters new to garment construction. The use of straightforward stitches—primarily garter-stitch and stocking-stitch—combined with chunky yarn and larger needles, allows for quick progress and clear stitch definition, ideal for developing foundational knitting skills.
