George The Giant Sloth Crochet Toy

What Is Being Made

George The Giant Sloth is a large amigurumi-style crocheted toy designed by Entangled Wool. This cuddly stuffed sloth measures an impressive 60cm in height when sitting and extends 1.1 meters from head to toe, making it a statement piece perfect for nurseries, playrooms, or as a distinctive handmade gift. The pattern produces a soft, huggable plush toy with characteristic sloth proportions and charm.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques combined with colorwork elements. The pattern utilizes a combination of basic crochet stitches worked in rounds and rows to build three-dimensional forms. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases, allowing the crocheter to sculpt the sloth's distinctive body, limbs, and facial features. The use of self-striping yarn in sections adds visual interest and dimension without requiring complex color-changing techniques.

Stitches Required

George The Giant Sloth uses the following crochet stitches (in U.S. terms):

  • Single Crochet (Sc) – The foundation stitch used throughout most of the pattern for building dense, structured fabric
  • Chain Stitch (Ch) – Used for creating foundation chains and transitional elements
  • Slip Stitch (Sl) – Employed to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – Provides texture variation and is used selectively within the design
  • Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) – A decrease stitch essential for shaping the toy's body, limbs, and facial features

Materials and Tools

The project requires super bulky yarn in a multi-color scheme: 600 grams of solid-colored yarn for color A (the primary body color) and 300 grams of self-striping super bulky yarn divided among colors B, C, and D for accent areas and details. Alternatively, crocheters may use small quantities of individual solid colors instead of self-striping yarn. An 8mm crochet hook is the primary tool, with a smaller hook or tapestry needle recommended for weaving in yarn ends neatly. The toy requires 1 kilogram of toy stuffing to achieve proper shape and structure. The pattern includes optional 4 strong magnets for those wishing to add interactive features to the finished sloth.

Pattern Specifications

The working tension is 7 single crochets over approximately 10 centimeters when using the specified yarn and hook size. All stitches indicated within parentheses brackets (such as [2 sc]) should be worked into the same stitch, a common notation in amigurumi patterns. This intermediate difficulty level makes the project suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle larger, more complex stuffed toys.
