Product Description

Do you remember that time in school when the math teacher draw a geometric form on the black bored and you had to calculate the circumference or surface of that form?

I loved that part of math the most. The fun to know the surface of a random strange object and applying it to real life.

But weather you hated math or loved it, this socks bring back the simplest forms and puts them on a sock leg.

The motives are only worked on the outside of the socks and are worked in the roositude inlay method.

Size: Foot length: 23 [25.5, 28]cm (9 [10, 11] inches), notes for adjusting the size included.

Needles: 2.5mm (US 1 1/2) circular needles or DPN

Yarn: 2 skein Regia 4-ply or other fingering weight yarn (210m / 230 yards) and up to 6 different contrrast colours 1m (1 yard) each.

Difficulty: basic sock knitting, description and video-help for roositude inlay included.

Geometry Socks by Atalante

Project Overview

Geometry Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by independent designer Atalante. This project celebrates the intersection of mathematics and textile craftsmanship, bringing geometric forms to life on sock legs. The pattern draws inspiration from the satisfaction of calculating shapes and circumferences, translating mathematical concepts into wearable art through colorwork knitting.

What Is Being Made

These are women's socks available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The finished foot lengths measure 23 cm (9 inches) for size Small, 25.5 cm (10 inches) for size Medium, and 28 cm (11 inches) for size Large. The socks feature geometric patterning on the leg portion, combining a main color with up to six different contrast colors to create visually striking mathematical designs.

Knitting Techniques and Methods

The Geometry Socks pattern is written specifically for the magic loop method, a popular technique for knitting small circumference projects in the round without using double-pointed needles. The pattern divides the sock into two working sections: Needle 1 works the instep (top of foot) and Needle 2 works the sole (bottom of foot). Knitters who prefer traditional double-pointed needles can adapt the pattern by dividing stitches across four dpns instead of using the magic loop construction.

Stitches Used

The gauge is worked in Stockinette Stitch (abbreviated as Stst), the fundamental knit fabric that creates the smooth, classic sock base. The colorwork geometric patterns are integrated into this stockinette foundation, likely using stranded colorwork techniques to introduce the contrast color details while maintaining the fabric structure.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

  • Main Yarn: Regia 4 ply, requiring 2 skeins. This yarn is composed of 75% wool and 25% polyamide, offering durability and elasticity ideal for sock wear. Each 50g ball provides 210 meters of yardage.
  • Contrast Colors: Up to 6 different contrast colors in fingering weight yarn, with only 1 meter (1 yard) of each color needed. This minimal yardage requirement makes it easy to use yarn scraps or small quantities from a stash.
  • Needles: 2.5mm (US 1½) circular needle for magic loop knitting, or four double-pointed needles of the same size for those preferring the dpn method
  • Additional Notions: 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and section changes, and a tapestry needle (also credited to designer Lotta Groeger) for weaving in ends and finishing

Pattern Notes

The pattern acknowledges test knitter piperredfern in the credits. The minimal yardage requirements for contrast colors make this an excellent project for stash busting or experimenting with multiple color combinations. The geometric theme allows knitters to engage with mathematical concepts while developing their colorwork and small-circumference knitting skills.
