GENEVIEVE: Lady's Knit Jumper in Reverse Stocking Stitch
What Is Being Made
GENEVIEVE is a women's pullover jumper designed by domoras.com, featuring a classic silhouette with a fitted yoke construction. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a sophisticated layering piece available in five graduated sizes, with finished lengths ranging from 60 to 64½ centimeters (23½ to 25½ inches) before washing. The design emphasizes simplicity and elegance through its primary stitch pattern and refined color blocking.
Stitch Techniques and Construction
Reverse stocking stitch forms the foundation of GENEVIEVE's fabric, creating a distinctive textured surface where the purl side becomes the public-facing design element. This reversal of the traditional stocking stitch aesthetic adds visual interest and depth to the finished garment. The yoke is worked in a contrasting color (Color B), creating a color-blocked design detail that defines the shoulder and upper chest area. A coordinating neckband in a third color (Color C) finishes the neck edge.
The jumper is constructed using standard knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The garment features set-in sleeves with lengths ranging from 43 to 46 centimeters (17 to 18 inches) before washing, allowing for versatile styling options. The yoke shaping is integrated into the overall construction, providing fitted proportions through the shoulders and upper torso.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
GENEVIEVE is designed to be worked in DK or sport weight yarn, offering flexibility in fiber choice while maintaining consistent gauge and drape. The original design sample was created using a sophisticated yarn blend from Campolmi Roberto Filati in Florence, Italy, combining two complementary fibers:
- SETA: 100% bourette silk, providing luxurious drape and subtle sheen
- Lino Cotone 1/7000: A 50% linen and 50% cotton blend, contributing breathability and structure
The original uses slightly more silk than linen-cotton for optimal hand and movement. Total yardage requirements vary by size: 400 to 600 grams of yarn is needed overall, divided between Color A (the main body color: 250–500 grams depending on size), Color B for the yoke (100–200 grams), and Color C for the neckband (50 grams, consistent across all sizes).
At the specified yardage of approximately 115 meters per 50 grams, crafters should anticipate purchasing between 460 and 690 meters of yarn total, depending on the chosen size.
Fiber Behavior and Care Considerations
The bourette silk component in the original yarn blend exhibits distinctive behavior during the first washing. The fabric will experience slight width contraction and length expansion initially, which is characteristic of this luxurious fiber. After the first wash, the silk gradually expands slightly with wear and movement, settling into its final dimensions. Finished measurements after washing are provided in the pattern (ranging from 63–68 centimeters in length and 45–48 centimeters in sleeve length), allowing crafters to anticipate the garment's behavior and final fit.
Suitable Needles and Gauge
While specific needle sizes are detailed in the complete pattern document, knitters working with DK or sport weight yarns will typically use needles in the US 4–6 range (3.5–4mm), adjusted as needed to achieve the pattern's specified gauge. Gauge accuracy is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions and proper fit through the yoke and sleeve cap.
