A super textured sweater with an interesting mix of stitches. The design reflects the traditional fishermen's sweaters of North East England, with it's generous fit and division of the various stitches. The lower borders of the Back, Front and Sleeves is a neat slip stitch edging which is also used to "frame" the cabled yoke and upper Sleeve pattern. The only section requiring a cable needle is on the yoke and upper sleeve sections.

Gansey Reflections Knitted Sweater by Pat Menchini

What is Being Made

Gansey Reflections is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Pat Menchini. This pullover garment is constructed as a traditional gansey-style jumper, available in six size options to fit bust measurements from 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) up to 127-132 cm (50-52 inches). The finished garment features an approximate actual bust measurement ranging from 94 cm (37¼ inches) in the smallest size to 144 cm (56¾ inches) in the largest size, with length to shoulder shaping varying between 57-61 cm (22½-24 inches) depending on size. All sleeve seams measure 46 cm (18 inches) across all sizes.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The primary construction method uses stocking stitch as the base fabric, which creates the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of traditional ganseys. The pattern incorporates cable work, as evidenced by the inclusion of a cable needle in the materials list, adding textural interest and visual depth to the design. The sweater is constructed in pieces and then assembled, requiring the use of stitch holders to manage active stitches during the building process.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stocking stitch, which forms the foundation of the sweater's fabric. Cable stitches are incorporated as decorative elements, worked using a cable needle to create twisted, dimensional effects. The pattern requires careful tension management, with the specified tension being 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 5 mm needles. For cable sections, the tension increases to 24 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 inches), indicating tighter gauge work in those areas.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Gansey Reflections is designed to be worked in Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran yarn in the colorway Elder (021). This aran-weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition for both stocking stitch and cable work. Yarn requirements are size-dependent, ranging from 13 balls of 50g (650 metres/545 yards total) for the smallest sizes to 16 balls of 50g (800 metres/1,744 yards total) for the largest size. The pattern notes that yarn amounts are approximate based on average requirements.

Needles and Tools Required

  • Four pairs of straight knitting needles in graduated sizes: 4 mm (UK 8, US 6), 4.5 mm (UK 7, US 7), 5 mm (UK 6, US 8), and 5.5 mm (UK 5, US 9)
  • One cable needle for working cable stitches
  • Two stitch holders for managing stitches during construction

The multiple needle sizes allow for proper tension control across different sections of the sweater, with the 5 mm needles being the primary size for the main stocking stitch fabric.

Pattern Notes

When selecting a yarn substitute for Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran, it is essential to ensure that the replacement yarn matches the specified tension to achieve the correct finished measurements. The pattern provides detailed size grading across six options, making this design accessible to a wide range of body sizes.
