Product Description
This tunic is ideal for frolicking like a faun in the fallen leaves in or curling up by the fireside. It has been designed to be feminine without being overpoweringly girly.
Lots of positive ease and generous length allow for growth and layering underneath.
Knit flat in pieces and then sewn together. It features a modified drop shoulder, and a fun little shell detail for the buttoned shoulder (you don’t need to be able to crochet, but you will need a hook for this).
This is a very easy knit. Pattern contains both charts and written instructions and lots of additional links to tutorials and notes.
My sample is in the Alpaca DK in Orchid. The cream sample is in the same yarn.Other suitable alternative yarns are listed.
Gamine Tunic by Elizabeth Felgate
What Is Being Made
The Gamine tunic is a feminine children's sweater designed by Elizabeth Felgate for knitters seeking a charming, understated garment suitable for casual wear. This tunic sweater is described as feminine without being overpoweringly girly, making it versatile for various occasions—from outdoor autumn play to cozy indoor relaxation. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is sized for children ranging from age 2-3 through age 8-9, with finished chest measurements ranging from 70cm (27½ inches) to 84cm (33 inches).
Construction and Techniques
The Gamine tunic employs a straightforward knit-flat and seamed construction method, which makes this an accessible project even for beginner knitters. The pattern is written out fully for the smallest size, with stitch counts and measurements for larger sizes provided in parentheses in ascending order. This organizational approach allows knitters to easily scale the pattern to their desired finished size. The design incorporates a crochet hook detail at the shoulders, adding a subtle decorative element to the finished garment.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Gamine tunic pattern assumes foundational knitting skills and techniques, including:
- Cast on and bind off
- Knit and purl stitches
- Increase and decrease techniques
- Sewing up seams to join flat-knitted pieces
These core techniques combine to create a garment that is classified as beginner to intermediate in difficulty level, making it suitable for knitters with some prior experience.
Materials and Specifications
The Gamine tunic is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape for children's garments. The pattern calls for 3.75mm (US size 5) needles or the correct needle size to achieve proper gauge. Additional notions required include waste yarn or spare cables and stitch holders for managing stitches during construction, a tapestry needle for sewing seams, a crochet hook matching the needle size for the shoulder detail, and 4-5 buttons for fastening the finished tunic.
Sizing Information
The pattern provides multiple size options to accommodate growing children:
- Age 2-3: 70cm / 27½ inches finished chest
- Age 4-5: 74cm / 29 inches finished chest
- Age 6-7: 77cm / 30½ inches finished chest
- Age 8-9: 84cm / 33 inches finished chest
All finished chest sizes are designed to be approximately 15cm (6 inches) larger than the wearer's actual chest measurement, providing comfortable ease for movement and layering.
