Furballs' Simple Eyes 3 Dishcloth
What is Being Made
Furballs' Simple Eyes 3 is a knitted dishcloth pattern designed by Tomato68Evony. This intermediate-level project creates a functional kitchen textile measuring approximately 11.5 inches by 6.5 inches (29 cm by 16.5 cm) before blocking. The dishcloth features a decorative eye motif, making it both practical and visually interesting for everyday kitchen use.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern is executed entirely through knitting, making it suitable for knitters with intermediate skill levels. The design employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create shaping and texture. Key techniques include:
- Cast-on method: The pattern begins with a Chinese waitress cast-on technique applied to 3 stitches, creating a decorative and secure foundation edge
- Increases: The pattern utilizes kfb (knit the front and back) and pfb (purl the front and back) techniques to add stitches and create shaping throughout the piece
- Make-one increases: The m1p (make one purl) stitch is employed to create additional stitches with minimal visibility
- Stitch manipulation: Techniques such as passing previous stitches over (ppso) are used to create decreases and textural elements
- Marker placement: The pattern incorporates stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and structural sections
Stitches Used
The pattern employs a limited but effective stitch vocabulary appropriate for intermediate knitters:
- Knit stitch (k): The foundational stitch creating the base fabric
- Purl stitch (p): Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and pattern definition
- Garter stitch: Created by knitting every row, this stitch forms the gauge measurement of 20 stitches by 40 rows over a 4-inch by 4-inch (10 cm by 10 cm) swatch in both cotton and acrylic yarns
- Increases: Kfb and pfb stitches create the necessary shaping for the eye design
- Decreases: Pass previous stitch over technique reduces stitches as needed for the pattern structure
Materials and Tools
The pattern accommodates two yarn fiber options, both in worsted weight:
- Non-mercerized 100% cotton: 1.2 ounces (34.1 grams) with yardage of 54.4 yards (49.8 meters)
- Acrylic: 1.0 ounce (28.6 grams) with yardage of 47.7 yards (43.6 meters)
Both yarn options produce the same finished measurements and gauge, offering flexibility based on fiber preference and availability.
The pattern requires two sets of knitting needles in different sizes:
- Size 3.50 mm / US 4 needles: Available in circular or double-point configuration, one pair or set required for the main fabric
- Size 3.00 mm / US 2.5 needles: Available in straight, circular, or double-point configuration, one pair or set required for ribbing or edging sections
Additional supplies include two stitch markers (or equivalent), scissors, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format for convenient reference during knitting.
