Funky Hat by Sarahjanedesigns
What Is Being Made
The Funky Hat is an advanced-level crochet design available as a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Sarahjanedesigns. This project creates a versatile hat suitable for multiple size ranges, from toddlers through adults, making it an adaptable design for various head circumferences and age groups.
Size Range and Measurements
The pattern includes six distinct size options to accommodate different wearers:
- Toddler: 45.5 – 50.5cm (18 – 20 inches)
- Child: 48 – 52cm (19 – 20.5 inches)
- Teen/Small: 53 – 56cm (20.5 – 22 inches)
- Medium: 56 – 58cm (21 – 23.5 inches)
- Large: 58 – 61cm (22 – 24.5 inches)
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This advanced crochet project employs fundamental crochet techniques including chain stitches to establish foundation rows, slip stitches for joining rounds, and double crochet stitches as the primary stitch throughout the construction. The pattern instructs crocheters to work to a specific length rather than counting rows, which allows for greater flexibility and ensures proper fit across the various sizes.
Stitches Used
The Funky Hat utilizes essential crochet stitches including:
- Chain (ch): Used to create the foundation and foundation chains
- Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch forming the main fabric of the hat
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and securing stitches
Yarn and Materials
The pattern accommodates two yarn weight options for flexibility in fiber choice and finished appearance. For DK weight yarn (8ply), the project requires approximately 200 metres of main colour yarn, plus about 100 metres each of two contrasting colours. For worsted weight yarn (11wpi or 10ply/9wpi), the large size requires similar yardage amounts. The contrasting colours create the "funky" visual element that defines this hat design, allowing crafters to experiment with colour combinations.
Tools and Gauge
A 5mm crochet hook is specified as the primary tool, though the pattern notes that the appropriate hook size should be selected to achieve correct tension and gauge. Correct gauge is emphasized as essential for a successful finished item.
Tension/gauge specifications vary by yarn weight:
- DK/8ply yarn: 15 double crochet stitches over 10cm with a 5mm hook
- Worsted weight yarn: 10 double crochet stitches over 10cm with a 5mm hook
Row gauge is noted as not important for this project since length is worked to measurement rather than row count. A yarn needle is also required for weaving in ends upon completion.
Pattern Details and Accessibility
The downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions using UK/Australian crochet terminology. To enhance accessibility for all crafters, instructions for DK (8ply) yarn are presented in bold and italic formatting, making them distinguishable for those printing in black and white. This design consideration ensures that crafters using either yarn weight can easily follow their specific instructions without confusion.
