Product Description
Knitting gloves with fingers can be a bit of a challenge. To make it easy for you, these gloves are done in stocking stitch with a bit of garter stitch only – but nonetheless with a lot of effect due to the contrasting yarns and all the pointy bits!
The given tension will result in a circumference of 19cm. For a well fitting glove it is best to make it a little smaller than your hand circumference (maybe about 1 cm less), so that it stretches somewhat around your hand, without overstretching. You can adjust the size slightly by changing the tension, e.g. a tension of 32 sts per 10 cm will provide a circumference of about 18 cm, and 28 sts per 10 cm one of about 20 cm.
Funky Fingers Knitted Gloves by Dagmar Mora
Project Overview
Funky Fingers is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for a pair of gloves featuring finger construction. Designed by Dagmar Mora, this downloadable PDF pattern creates gloves with distinctive visual impact through contrasting yarns and textured detailing, making finger gloves accessible to knitters with some experience.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a complete pair of knitted gloves with individual fingers. The gloves are constructed to fit fingering weight yarn and feature a combination of smooth and textured stitch work that creates striking visual effects despite the relatively simple stitch repertoire used throughout the design.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Stocking stitch – The primary stitch used for the majority of the glove construction, creating a smooth, classic fabric
- Garter stitch – Used selectively as accent detailing to add texture and visual interest
- Finger construction – Specialized technique for knitting individual fingers as part of the glove structure
- Embroidery – Applied embellishment work mentioned in the pattern instructions, adding decorative "pointy bits" to enhance the funky aesthetic
- Color work with contrasting yarns – The pattern leverages two different yarns in complementary colors to create visual depth and pattern definition
Stitches Featured
The pattern employs a minimalist stitch approach, relying primarily on stocking stitch as the foundation fabric with garter stitch used strategically for textural contrast. This straightforward stitch selection makes the pattern achievable for intermediate knitters while allowing the color blocking and embroidery work to provide the visual interest.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply fingering weight yarn. The designer recommends using two contrasting balls of yarn:
- Color A: One ball (50g, approximately 210–200 meters) of solid-color 4-ply wool, such as Regia 4-ply or Regia Stretch. The designer used Regia 4-ply in Black (#2066)
- Color B: One ball (50g, approximately 210–200 meters) of self-striping 4-ply wool that changes color quickly (every few stitches rather than rows), such as Regia 4-ply Color or Regia Stretch Color. The designer used Regia Stretch Color in Toronto (#0121)
Yarn Selection Guidance
The pattern works with any fingering weight wool. The designer specifically recommends choosing a self-striping wool for Color B that transitions colors rapidly—every few stitches rather than entire rows—to maximize the visual striping effect. While the designer's choice of Regia Stretch Color in Toronto creates a beautiful color scheme, the pattern notes that working with stretch wool can present slight challenges during embroidery work due to the yarn's thinner construction, though the color payoff makes this worthwhile.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills including comfort with stocking stitch, garter stitch, and basic finger construction techniques. The straightforward stitch work is balanced by the precision required for finger shaping and the embroidery embellishment work.
