Fullan Hat by mrenji
What is Being Made
The Fullan Hat is a structured crochet hat designed by Mary Renji. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat available in three sizes: 20 inches, 22 inches, and 24 inches (51, 56, and 61 centimeters in circumference). The completed hat measures approximately 10.5 inches (27 centimeters) from the top to the bottom, making it a classic pull-on style suitable for various head sizes.
Construction Techniques
The Fullan Hat employs a distinctive construction method that begins with a ribbed cuff. The pattern starts by creating a ribbing section measuring just over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in length, which can be adjusted longer or shorter according to personal preference. A key advantage of this design is that the yarn does not need to be cut after joining the ribbing; instead, it is easily carried along the round as the hat progresses upward from the cuff.
The hat is worked in the round using continuous rounds rather than traditional flat rows, allowing for seamless construction. This technique creates a smooth, professional finish without visible seams running up the sides of the hat.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (sc) – The primary stitch used throughout most of the hat construction
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – Used in combination with single crochet, particularly in the ribbing section
- Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) – A decrease stitch for shaping the crown
- Chain (ch) – Used to begin the ribbing foundation
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used for joining rounds
- Back Loop Only (blo) – A technique for creating texture and definition in specific sections
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires Garnstudio DROPS Alaska yarn in an aran weight. Two skeins totaling 140 meters (153.1 yards) and 100 grams are needed to complete the hat. The recommended hook size is 5.5 mm (US size I).
The gauge for this project is 14 stitches by 17 rows in single crochet, which equals 4 inches (10 centimeters) when measured on a swatch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements specified in the pattern.
Pattern Details
The pattern is written using US crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American stitch abbreviations and instructions. The intermediate skill level indicates that crafters should have foundational knowledge of basic crochet stitches and techniques, including working in the round and executing simple decreases.
The ribbing foundation creates a fitted, elastic cuff that helps the hat stay securely on the head. The combination of single crochet and half double crochet in the ribbing section produces a textured, stretchy band that is both functional and visually interesting. As the hat progresses beyond the ribbing, the construction likely transitions to maintain consistent stitch patterns while shaping the crown to fit the three available sizes.
