Frida Kahlo Amigurumi Doll
What is Being Made
This pattern creates a crocheted amigurumi doll inspired by Frida Kahlo, a finished doll measuring approximately 11 cm in height. The design is crafted by designer Loveandfire (Lorena Flores) as part of the Dolls and Dolls Accessories collection. This is an intermediate-level crochet project suitable for crafters with foundational crochet skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction techniques.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Frida Kahlo doll employs several key crochet techniques to achieve its three-dimensional form:
- Magic Ring Construction: Most pieces are created using the magic ring method, a foundational technique for starting amigurumi projects in the round without a traditional chain base.
- Continuous Rounds: The majority of the work is executed in continuous rounds rather than closing each round with a slip stitch, allowing for seamless spiral construction.
- Row Work: Certain sections are worked in rows as specified within the pattern instructions.
- Stuffing During Construction: The amigurumi is filled with synthetic fiber fill as you work, rather than waiting until completion, which helps achieve proper shape and structure.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches common to amigurumi construction. Key abbreviations referenced include ma (magic ring) and bpsc (back post single crochet), with additional stitch instructions detailed throughout the pattern documentation. The specific stitch combinations create the dimensional shaping necessary for the doll's head, body, limbs, and facial features.
Materials and Yarn
This project uses Pearl cotton number 8 as the primary yarn material, a thread-weight yarn that is notably thinner than standard worsted-weight yarn. The color palette includes beige, light blue, light brown, black, orange, burgundy, light pink, and fuchsia, allowing for accurate representation of Frida Kahlo's distinctive appearance and clothing.
The pattern calls for two crochet hook sizes: a 2 mm hook and a 1.25 mm hook. The hook change is necessary because Pearl cotton's thinness requires adjustment to achieve proper gauge and visible stitch definition. Additional materials include synthetic fiber fill for stuffing, a needle for finishing, scissors, and a stitch marker for tracking rounds.
Project Specifications
The approximate completion time for this amigurumi doll is 4 hours. The final size depends on the yarn weight and hook size selected; using the specified materials and hook sizes yields an 11 cm doll. Crafters using alternative yarn weights should maintain consistent hook size throughout the entire project to ensure uniform stitch appearance and proper proportions.
