Product Description
Can you say je nais se qui? A little flirty but still a little covered-up. This tank top is worked in the round to the underarms, and is just interesting enough to keep you going until suddenly, you are done! The size M sample used 647 yards of yarn. Perfect for when you need something seasonal, but French Quarter truly can be multi-seasonal when paired with Ninth Ward Cosy or a jacket.
Experiencing hot flashes or live in a humid climate? A perfect fit. I've put in help for if you need to change the shaping in the body, and I have done the trim so it is completely done on the needles. Working in your ends is the actual last step before blocking. You will want to block to get the most out of the yarn and the Tilting Ladder panels.

French Quarter Tank by Jill Wolcott
Garment Overview
The French Quarter Tank is a sophisticated knitted sleeveless top designed by Jill Wolcott for intermediate knitters seeking a versatile seasonal piece. This tank combines elegant stitch work with practical construction, offering a flirty yet modest silhouette suitable for various climates and occasions. The design is intentionally multi-seasonal, pairing beautifully with layering pieces like the Ninth Ward or a jacket for cooler weather, while standing alone during warmer months.
Construction Method
This tank top is worked in the round to the underarms, streamlining the knitting process and eliminating the need for seaming in the body. The yoke and upper sections transition to flat knitting for the armhole shaping and finishing details. This hybrid approach combines the efficiency of circular construction with the control offered by flat knitting where shaping is most critical. The pattern includes helpful modifications for adjusting body shaping to achieve a customized fit.
Stitch Techniques and Design Elements
- Cables and Lace: The tank features cable panels combined with lace elements, creating visual interest and texture throughout the garment. The Tilting Ladder panels are a signature design element that requires blocking to fully showcase the yarn's drape and stitch definition.
- Integrated Trim: The trim is worked entirely on the needles as part of the main construction, eliminating the need for separate finishing steps. This integrated approach ensures a polished, professional appearance.
- In-the-Round and Flat Knitting: The pattern employs both circular and flat knitting techniques, offering knitters experience with multiple construction methods in a single project.
Yarn and Materials
The French Quarter Tank is designed for sport weight yarn (3-ply), with the sample garment requiring approximately 675 yards of yarn. This yardage allows for a well-proportioned tank with adequate fabric for comfortable wear. Sport weight yarn provides a lightweight fabric ideal for warm climates and humid conditions, making this tank an excellent choice for those experiencing hot flashes or living in moisture-heavy environments.
Finishing and Blocking
The pattern emphasizes the importance of blocking to achieve the best results, particularly for showcasing the Tilting Ladder panels and allowing the yarn to fully bloom. Weaving in ends is the final step before blocking, ensuring a polished finished garment that maximizes the beauty of both the stitch work and the yarn itself.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is designed to keep experienced knitters engaged with interesting stitch work and shaping challenges while remaining achievable for those with solid fundamental knitting skills.
