Product Description
Thank you to everyone who bought Francie, 1989, and Smoke Signals January 16 - February 28, 2010! Your purchases allowed me to donate $1098 to Doctors Without Borders as part of the Help in Haiti project.
These socks are named for Francie Nolan, the main character in my favorite book, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. Like the book, and like Francie, the socks are full of unexpected beauty and character. There are stories hidden in their folds, interesting shapes to be found in their bark, and new ideas to be found in their branches.
These socks were designed with an adventurous knitter in mind. While the leg of the socks is easier to execute than it might appear at first glance, the foot of the socks involves shaping that is probably new to most sock knitters. This shaping results in interesting curves in new places, a foot-hugging contour that surpasses the comfortable clinging power of most traditional ribbed socks, and a new way to shape a toe. The socks may take a bit more
Francie Socks by Rebekkah Kerner
Project Overview
Francie is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by Rebekkah Kerner. Named after Francie Nolan, the protagonist from Betty Smith's classic novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, these socks combine literary inspiration with innovative sock construction. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is crafted using 4-ply yarn weight, making it suitable for knitters seeking a moderately challenging project with creative shaping techniques.
Design Philosophy
Like the novel that inspired them, Francie socks are designed to showcase unexpected beauty and character. The pattern incorporates hidden stories in its construction, interesting textural elements reminiscent of tree bark, and branching design ideas throughout. This sock pattern was specifically developed for adventurous knitters who are ready to expand their sock-making skills beyond traditional approaches.
Construction Techniques
The Francie socks feature two distinct construction zones, each with its own technical approach:
- Leg Section: The leg portion appears more complex than its actual execution, making it an approachable introduction to the pattern for intermediate knitters. This section builds confidence before moving to the more involved foot shaping.
- Foot Section: The foot incorporates specialized shaping techniques that are likely new to most sock knitters. This innovative shaping creates curves in unexpected locations and produces a contoured fit that hugs the foot more effectively than traditional ribbed sock construction.
Fit and Comfort Features
The unique foot shaping in the Francie pattern results in a superior foot-hugging contour compared to conventional sock designs. Rather than relying solely on ribbed stitch patterns for elasticity and fit, the three-dimensional shaping of the foot provides enhanced comfort and a customized feel that adapts to the wearer's foot shape.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a standard choice for sock knitting that provides durability and a refined finished fabric. Knitters will need appropriate needles for their chosen yarn and gauge, with the specific needle size and type determined by individual yarn selection and desired fabric characteristics.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Francie pattern assumes knitters have foundational sock-knitting experience and are comfortable with basic sock construction methods. The pattern challenges knitters to master new shaping techniques while maintaining the fundamental skills required for successful sock completion.
