Product Description
The scarf begins with a set of large blocks which are broken into progressively smaller blocks. The blocks then increase in size again. Because of the way the blocks change size there are places where half a block is worked at a time or you change direction part way across the scarf. Some familiarity with the entrelac technique is advised. A garter stitch border provides a little extra width and a finished edge.
The sample scarf is about 8.5" x 58" (22cm x 147cm). It could easily be shortened or lengthened by removing or adding rows of blocks.
The sample used somewhat less than 1 ball of each of the blue and green yarns and about 1.5 balls of gold. I knit a second scarf in a single color which used about 2.5 balls of Cotton Fine at the same gauge.
The pattern includes basic instructions for the different sized entrelac blocks and schematics showing the order in which the blocks are worked.
Fractured Entrelac Scarf by Nancy Hand
What is Being Made
The Fractured Entrelac Scarf is a knitted accessory designed by Nancy Hand that measures approximately 8.5 inches (22 centimeters) wide and 58 inches (147 centimeters) long. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a sophisticated scarf featuring a dynamic visual structure built on the entrelac technique, with blocks that progressively decrease and then increase in size throughout the design.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern centers on the entrelac technique, a method of knitting that creates a woven, interlocking block pattern. The Fractured Entrelac Scarf employs a variation of this technique where the blocks change size strategically throughout the piece. Because of these size transitions, the knitter will work half blocks at certain points and change direction partway across the scarf width, adding complexity and visual interest to the final piece.
The pattern includes a garter stitch border that frames the entrelac blocks and provides additional finished width and a polished edge. The designer notes that some familiarity with the entrelac technique is advised before beginning this project, making it suitable for knitters with intermediate experience.
Stitches Used
- Entrelac blocks (interlocking woven pattern)
- Garter stitch (for border)
Materials
Yarn: Cotton Fine fingering weight yarn from the Brown Sheep Company. For the blue colorway shown in the sample, the pattern calls for 1 ball each of Hawaiian Sky #767 and Celery Leaves #844, plus 2 balls of Sunflower Gold #343. For a single-color version, approximately 3 balls (600 yards or 550 meters) are required.
Needles: US 4 (3.5mm) needles
Gauge: 28 stitches and 42 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters)
Optional: 2 stitch markers to assist with pattern tracking
Pattern Overview
The scarf begins with a cast-on of 52 stitches followed by 3 rows of knitting to establish the foundation. The construction then progresses through a series of large entrelac blocks that systematically break down into progressively smaller blocks before reversing direction and increasing in size again. This fractal-like progression creates the distinctive visual character of the design. The garter stitch border provides structure and a finished appearance to the edges throughout the piece.
