Product Description
Original knitting pattern.
Since I live in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, I thought it was high time that I designed some Adirondack-y themed patterns. Here is my first….
Forest Friends - Bambi & Bunnies Hat pattern is in PDF format (download) and is sized for ages 4 - 12, with a finished circumference of 20-21”. I have also included instructions on sizing it down a bit for littler ones. It features two fawns, two bunnies and a forest, oh, I mean a tree! Designed to be knit in the round with worsted weight yarn using the stranded colorwork technique. Instead of using two colors, you could change the background color part way through to create an earth/sky look, like the green/gray sample. Either way, two or three colors, this would make a very happy hat for that special someone.

Project Overview
The Forest Friends hat is a charming knitted design featuring woodland-themed stranded colorwork, perfect for children ages 4 to 12 with a finished circumference of 20-21 inches. What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a cozy children's hat featuring Bambi and bunny designs worked in stranded colorwork. The hat is designed to fit ages approximately 4 to 12 years old, with the pattern also including notes for creating a smaller version. The finished hat measures 20-21 inches in circumference and provides a warm, decorative accessory with charming forest animal imagery.
Knitting Techniques Used
Stranded Colorwork in the Round: The primary technique featured in this pattern is stranded colorwork, also known as Fair Isle knitting. This method involves carrying two colors of yarn simultaneously while knitting in the round, creating intricate patterns by switching between the main color and contrast colors as indicated by the included charts. The colorwork is worked in stockinette stitch, the most common foundation stitch for this technique.
Circular Knitting: The hat is constructed in the round using either 16-inch circular needles or double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction and maintains the cylindrical shape of the hat throughout the knitting process.
Ribbed Cuff: The hat begins with a ribbed cuff worked in knit and purl stitches in alternating patterns, which creates an elastic edge that helps the hat stay securely on the wearer's head.
Decreasing for Crown Shaping: The pattern includes decreases at the top of the hat to shape the crown, transitioning from circular needles to double-pointed needles as the stitch count reduces near the completion of the project.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch used throughout the stockinette stitch sections and ribbing
- Purl (P): Used in alternating pattern with knit stitches to create the ribbed cuff
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the crown of the hat
- Stockinette Stitch: The base stitch for the colorwork sections, created by knitting every round
- Ribbing (K1, P1): The alternating knit and purl pattern that forms the elastic cuff
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Forest Friends hat requires worsted weight yarn totaling approximately 60 grams. The pattern uses Renaissance Wool yarn (100 grams = 190 yards), with the designer's sample using 44 grams of tan for the main color and 16 grams of brown for contrast details. Knitters may substitute any worsted weight yarn in their chosen colors to create different colorway variations while maintaining the same gauge and finished dimensions.
The pattern calls for US size 6 and US 8 needles—either 16-inch circular needles or double-pointed needles in the larger size for working the top decreases. Needle size should be selected to match the specified gauge of 5 stitches per 1 inch in stockinette stitch.
Pattern Construction Details
The hat begins with casting on 100 stitches using the larger needles, joined in the round without twisting. The first 8 rounds are worked as knit 1, purl 1 ribbing on the smaller needles to create the fitted cuff. After completing the ribbing, knitters switch back to the larger needles and work one plain round in the main color before beginning the stranded colorwork sections. The colorwork is worked following included charts in stockinette stitch for 25 rounds, with the flexibility to work the animal motifs in any preferred order. The pattern concludes with decreases worked on double-pointed needles to shape and close the crown.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and have some experience with working in the round and managing multiple colors. The stranded colorwork technique requires attention to tension and color management, but the straightforward construction and clear charting make it an approachable introduction to Fair Isle-style knitting.
