Product Description
This is the perfect Spring/Summer crochet pattern! The pattern contains instructions for 3 different butterflies and will explain in detail how to make them into a beautiful wall hanging! I have used DK 100% acrylic in the first image but then I also worked with DK and 3 ply 100% cotton in the next photos which worked really well and the butterflies held their shape even better. Yarn used in the first image is King Cole Bramble DK in Gorse.
You could also use the butterflies for appliques, bunting, a baby mobile, hair clips, the list is endless! The pattern is availble to follow in UK or US terms. This pattern was orginally published in Crochet Society Box 15!

Flutter of Wishes Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
The Flutter of Wishes Wall Hanging is a decorative crochet project designed by Kathryn Pope. This wall hanging features an arrangement of crocheted butterflies in varying sizes, creating an eye-catching display piece. The finished wall hanging measures approximately 37 x 68 cm (width x height), making it a substantial decorative accent suitable for bedrooms, living spaces, or creative studios. The design combines small butterflies measuring 5 x 5 cm with larger butterflies measuring 8.5 x 7.5 cm when blocked, allowing for visual interest and dimension in the overall composition.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-level crochet pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques accessible to those new to the craft. The pattern utilizes back loop only (BLO) stitching in sections, which creates textured effects and helps define the butterfly shapes. Blocking is incorporated into the construction process, as the finished butterflies are blocked to achieve their specified dimensions. The project also involves assembly work, as individual butterfly motifs must be arranged and attached to create the final wall hanging composition.
Stitches Used
The Flutter of Wishes pattern incorporates a range of fundamental crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch): Used to create foundation chains and chain spaces (ch-sp) throughout the pattern
- Slip stitch (sl st): Employed for joining rounds and connecting pieces
- Double crochet (dc): A core stitch providing structure and density to the butterfly motifs
- Half treble crochet (htr): Used to create varied stitch heights and texture
- Treble crochet (tr): Adds height and openness to specific sections of the design
- Double treble crochet (dtr): Creates taller stitches for dimensional effects
Materials and Tools
The Flutter of Wishes Wall Hanging is worked using DK weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition for the delicate butterfly shapes. The pattern sample shown uses King Cole Bramble DK in the colorway Gorse 4490, requiring one 100g ball (290m). This yarn is composed of 100% premium acrylic, offering durability and easy care for a wall hanging. The pattern notes indicate that alternative yarn weights can be substituted if desired, and 100% cotton yarn has been used successfully on some versions of the butterflies.
Essential tools for this project include a 3.5mm crochet hook, appropriately sized for working with DK weight yarn. Additional supplies needed are a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing details, scissors for cutting yarn, and a stitch marker for tracking pattern rows. The wall hanging is mounted on a branch or wooden dowel, which serves as the display mechanism and adds a natural, organic element to the finished piece.
Skill Level and Accessibility
Rated as a beginner-level project, the Flutter of Wishes Wall Hanging is designed to be accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The pattern uses standard abbreviations in UK terms and provides clear stitch definitions. The combination of basic stitches and straightforward construction makes this an ideal project for developing fundamental crochet skills while creating a beautiful, finished decorative piece suitable for gifting or personal use.
