Product Description

This is a felted handbag worked in three pieces: the front, the back, and then the base and sides worked as one piece. The front of the bag features three Thistle flowers with beaded centers and satin stitched flower heads. My inspiration for this design came from the Thistle flowers that I see growing around my home in the Scottish countryside.

Instructions for this bag will be provided in both written and charted format.

What is Being Made

The Flower of Scotland Bag is a knitted accessory featuring a decorative thistle motif inspired by the wildflowers of the Scottish countryside. This finished bag measures 12 inches (30cm) wide by 8.5 inches (21.5cm) high, with a base depth of 2.5 inches (6cm) that tapers to 0.75 inches (2cm) at the top opening. The design celebrates Scotland's national emblem, the thistle, which has held symbolic significance since the reign of Alexander III in the 13th century.

Design Inspiration and Significance

The thistle motif draws from historical and cultural heritage. According to Scottish legend, a barefoot Norse invader stepped upon a thistle during a nighttime raid, and his cries of pain alerted the Scottish army to the presence of invaders, ultimately preventing a surprise attack. This historical narrative is woven into the bag's aesthetic, making it more than a functional accessory—it is a celebration of Scottish identity and natural beauty.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project suitable for beginners, making it an accessible introduction to colorwork and bag construction. The design incorporates a decorative thistle pattern, which requires working with multiple yarn colors to create the motif against the main body of the bag. The structured shape with tapering dimensions demonstrates fundamental shaping techniques used in knitted bag construction.

Yarn and Materials

The Flower of Scotland Bag uses a combination of quality yarns to achieve its finished appearance:

  • 415m/453yds of Garnstudio DROPS Nepal yarn in shade 4434 Purple (primary yarn weight: aran)
  • 23m/25yds of Garnstudio DROPS Nepal yarn in shade 7238 Olive (for thistle leaves)
  • 8m/9yds of Garnstudio DROPS Nepal yarn in shade 4399 Dark Purple (for thistle details)
  • 27m/30yds of Garnstudio DROPS Alpaca yarn in shade 7238 Olive (for additional texture or reinforcement)
  • Oddments of Twilley's Goldfingering Metallic Yarn in shade 61 Lilac Multi (for embellishment accents)

Yarn Weight and Needle Considerations

The primary yarn used is aran weight, a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and provides excellent stitch definition for displaying the thistle colorwork pattern. Aran weight yarn is ideal for beginner knitters as it creates a fabric with good drape and structure, suitable for a structured bag that maintains its shape. The combination of DROPS Nepal and DROPS Alpaca yarns provides both warmth and subtle texture variation, while the metallic Goldfingering yarn adds a touch of sparkle to highlight the thistle design.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern overview, the construction of this bag employs standard knitting stitches appropriate for colorwork and shaping. The thistle motif is created using intarsia or stranded colorwork techniques, where different colored yarns are carried or worked into the fabric to create the pattern. The tapering shape from the base to the top requires decreasing techniques to achieve the narrower opening, a fundamental skill for bag construction.

Beginner-Friendly Design

Classified as a beginner project, the Flower of Scotland Bag introduces knitters to essential techniques without overwhelming complexity. The finished dimensions are modest, making the project manageable for those new to bag knitting. The colorwork element provides an opportunity to practice working with multiple yarn colors while creating a visually striking finished object.
