Flower Fairy Cap by Sally Pointer

What is Being Made

The Flower Fairy Cap is a stretchy, head-hugging knitted hat designed to flatter a wide range of ages and face shapes. This whimsical design features floral-inspired lace patterning and is finished with a decorative liripipe—a traditional tail element—tied in an overhand knot for added charm and visual interest.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance and fit. The cap is constructed using circular knitting in the round, which creates a seamless, stretchy fabric ideal for a close-fitting hat. The design incorporates lace knitting with floral-inspired motifs, requiring knitters to work yarn overs and decreases in coordinated patterns. The pattern features a 6-stitch repeat structure, allowing for customizable sizing by adjusting cast-on counts in multiples of 6. This modular approach makes the design adaptable for different head sizes while maintaining the integrity of the lace pattern.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The primary stitch base for this cap is stockinette stitch, which provides the smooth foundation fabric. The lace patterning is created through strategic placement of yarn overs and decreases that form the floral-inspired design elements. The gauge is established at 24 stitches over 4 inches when working stockinette stitch in the round, ensuring consistent sizing and fabric drape.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

  • Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knit) weight yarn
  • Yardage Required: Approximately 135 metres
  • Yarn Example: The pattern is shown in KnitPicks Elegance in Cornflower
  • Needles: 3.5mm (US Size 4) double-pointed needles or circular needles, or size as needed to achieve the specified gauge
  • Additional Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Sizing and Fit

The Flower Fairy Cap is designed with stretch and flexibility, making it suitable for most adult head sizes in its primary version. Instructions for a smaller child size are included within the pattern in parentheses. The 6-stitch repeat structure allows knitters to customize the fit further by adjusting cast-on counts in multiples of 6 for different sizing variations. The hat is meant to be worn close to the head, with the finished, blocked adult size providing a snug, flattering fit.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate in difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of circular knitting, lace work, and pattern repeats requires comfort with reading charts or written lace instructions, but the straightforward construction and repeating pattern structure make it an achievable project for those beyond the beginner stage.
