Floranna Mug Rugs by Jenni Kroeker

Project Overview

The Floranna Mug Rugs are beginner-friendly crochet coasters designed to add decorative flair to any table setting. These small, functional pieces combine simple stitch work with textured detail, making them an ideal project for those new to crochet who want to create practical home décor items.

What Is Being Made

Mug rugs are small rectangular table accessories that sit beneath mugs or cups to protect surfaces while adding visual interest to a table setting. The Floranna design creates a finished piece measuring approximately 12 inches wide (based on the 24-stitch foundation) with a decorative fringe trim along the edges.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction starts with a chain foundation and uses basic turning chains and stitch placement throughout. The fringe finishing technique involves folding yarn pieces and securing them into the edge stitches of the completed rug, adding both texture and movement to the final piece.

Primary Stitches

  • Single Crochet (SC): The foundation stitch used in the starting row and throughout the pattern for structure and stability
  • Chain Stitch (CH): Used for spacing and creating the open, airy quality of the moss stitch pattern
  • Moss Stitch: The main pattern stitch worked over rows 2–16, created by alternating single crochet stitches with chain-one spaces. This stitch produces a textured, open fabric with a distinctive checkerboard appearance that allows light to pass through while maintaining structural integrity

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Worsted weight (#4 or medium weight) yarn is recommended. Premier Home Cotton or any cotton or cotton-blend yarn works well for this project, making it ideal for table linens that may require washing.

Hook: A 5mm/H crochet hook or any size appropriate for your chosen yarn. Gauge is not critical for this project, allowing flexibility in hook selection.

Finishing Materials: Additional yarn for the fringe trim—approximately 16 pieces cut to 10 inches in length (8 pieces for each side of the rug).

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins with a foundation chain of 25 stitches, which reduces to 24 working stitches after the first row. The starting row establishes the moss stitch pattern by working single crochet stitches separated by chain-one spaces. The main body consists of 15 rows (rows 2–16) of moss stitch worked in a consistent rhythm, creating an even, textured fabric. Each row maintains 24 stitches and includes a turning chain to position the hook for the next row.

Finishing Details

The fringe finishing adds both decorative and functional elements to the mug rug. Eight fringe pieces are attached to each long side of the rug, spaced evenly along the edge. Each fringe piece is created by folding a 10-inch length of yarn in half twice, then inserting the folded center through an edge stitch and pulling the yarn ends through to secure. This technique creates a gathered, tassel-like effect that frames the rug and adds movement.

Skill Level and Project Suitability

Classified as a beginner project, the Floranna Mug Rugs require only basic crochet knowledge. The moss stitch pattern, while creating visual texture, uses only single crochet and chain stitches repeated in a simple sequence. The straightforward construction, lack of shaping, and non-critical gauge make this an excellent first project for learning consistent stitch tension and rhythm while producing a practical, gift-worthy finished item.
