Product Description
I wanted to create a motif using my basic floral applique from my Sunflower Shawl out of thread with the intention of stringing it up to the hoop, but when I finished the second round of half double crochets, I realized it was going to be too large to do this, so I switched gears, and reworked the center with double crochets so it would be large enough to stretch to fit the hoop size so I could work the petals around it. Love how it looks lacy along the center - turned out perfectly!
Materials You'll Need: A small amount of #10 crochet cotton thread (I used Artiste brand), 2.35mm Crochet Hook, Tapestry Needle, Pair of 40mm Hoop Earrings, Pair of Earring Wires, and Jewelry Pliers.
Yarn Alternative: Aunt Lydia's #10 Classic Crochet Thread.
Time Spent: 15-20 Minutes for Pair
Abbreviations to Know: DC, SC.
Floral Hoop Earrings Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
These are delicate crocheted floral hoop earrings designed by Alexandra EyeLoveKnots. The pattern creates a pair of decorative earrings featuring crocheted floral motifs mounted on 40mm hoops with earring wires. The design combines a central floral applique with petals worked around the center, resulting in an elegant, lacy jewelry piece suitable for everyday wear or special occasions.
Design Development and Techniques
The pattern showcases thoughtful design iteration. The creator originally intended to use a basic floral applique motif from her Sunflower Shawl pattern, working in thread to create a delicate effect. However, after completing the second round of half double crochets, she discovered the motif was too large for the intended construction method. She then reworked the center using double crochets instead, which created a larger base piece perfectly sized to stretch across the hoop. This modification allowed her to work petals around the expanded center, resulting in a lacy appearance that the designer was pleased with.
Stitches Used
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – Used in initial rounds before the pattern was revised
- Double Crochet (DC) – Used in the reworked center to achieve the proper sizing for the hoop
Materials and Tools
This intermediate-level project requires minimal materials, making it an efficient use of yarn stash:
- Crochet Thread: A small amount of #10 crochet thread in two colors. The designer used Artiste brand thread in Orchid and Gold Dust colorways for a coordinated, elegant appearance.
- Crochet Hook: 2.35mm crochet hook, appropriately sized for working with fine thread
- Hardware: Two 40mm hoops with loops (the designer used item #12353827 from JoAnns) and a pair of 20mm French earring wires
- Finishing Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with some experience who are comfortable working with fine thread and managing small-scale projects. The pattern requires understanding of basic stitches and the ability to follow stitch pattern modifications.
