Product Description
Fledgling is a top-down triangular shawl designed to showcase a skein of special sock yarn. The three main patterned sections are related feathery motifs that use a number of knit stitches between the yarn overs and their accompanying decreases to shape the fabric into peaks and valleys, including the wide shallow scallops that edge the piece. Only right-side rows are patterned -- every wrong-side row is purled. Choose a drapey yarn in a solid or subtly variegated semi-solid color for best results.
Skills required are: knitting and purling; casting on provisionally; working a yarn over; decreasing with ssk, k2tog, sk2p, and s2kp2; and binding off. The pattern is charted, but a supplemental pdf with written instructions corresponding to each chart is also available to download.
Fledgling Triangular Shawl by Rebecca Blair
What Is Being Made
Fledgling is a top-down triangular scarf or small shawl designed by Rebecca Blair to showcase a single skein of special sock yarn. The design features three main patterned sections with related feathery motifs that create an elegant, drapey accessory. The piece is finished with wide shallow scallops that edge the entire design, giving it a refined, finished appearance suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
Design and Construction Techniques
This knitting pattern uses a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to work from the center outward and adjust the final size as needed. The design incorporates feathery motifs throughout the three main patterned sections, creating visual interest and texture. The scalloped edging is achieved through strategic placement of yarn overs and decreases that shape the fabric into peaks and valleys, producing the characteristic shallow scallops that frame the shawl.
The pattern is chart-based, requiring knitters to read and follow a visual schematic as they work. Rebecca Blair recommends choosing a drapey yarn in a solid or subtly variegated semi-solid color to allow the feathery stitch patterns to be clearly visible and to showcase the yarn's inherent qualities.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
Fledgling employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the fabric and create texture in combination with other techniques
- Yarn overs create the openwork and lacy elements characteristic of the feathery motifs
- Decreases are used to shape the fabric and create the peaks and valleys; specific decreases include ssk (slip, slip, knit), k2tog (knit two together), sk2p (slip one, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over), and s2kp2 (slip one, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over twice)
- Provisional cast-on is used at the beginning to allow for later grafting or picking up stitches
- Binding off secures the final edge
Knitters must also be comfortable reading charts, which provide a visual representation of the stitch pattern across rows.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern is designed around 4-ply weight yarn, which is also commonly referred to as fingering or sock weight. The sample shown uses one skein of Viola Fancy Sock, a luxury blend containing 70% baby alpaca, 20% silk, and 10% cashmere. This particular yarn provides 437 yards (400 meters) per 100-gram skein and comes in the colorway Robin's Egg.
Rebecca Blair recommends selecting a drapey yarn in solid or subtly variegated semi-solid colors to best showcase the stitch definition of the feathery motifs. The fiber content of the recommended yarn—combining soft baby alpaca with lustrous silk and cashmere—creates an exceptionally drapey, luxurious fabric that enhances the finished shawl's elegance.
Tools and Notions Required

- One US #4 (3.5mm) circular needle, 24 inches or 32 inches long

- Scrap yarn for the provisional cast-on
- Stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction sections
