Product Description
This crochet pattern for the Fish by Sarah Quillen creates a soft huggable 14" stuffed fish. The terms are US. The pattern includes an “easy to follow” layout with many pictures for reference. The pattern is designed for blanket yarn but can also be done in worsted weight yarn with a size F hook and 10mm eyes to create a much smaller fish. I have found some yarn colors that Love Crafts has that I think will look good with this pattern, but be creative, find the colors you like and have some fun.
For this pattern you will need:
o Bernat Blanket Yarn
o Hook size US K 10.5 / 6.5mm
o Yarn needle
o Stitch marker
o Polyester fiberfill stuffing
o 2 safety eyes (15mm)
Fish Crochet Toy by Sarah Quillen
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level crochet pattern designed to create a stuffed fish toy. The pattern is created by independent designer Sarah Quillen and is available as a downloadable PDF from The Fidgety Flower LLC. The fish is constructed using continuous spiral rounds, making it an engaging project for crocheters with some experience beyond beginner level.
Materials Required
The Fish pattern calls for specific yarn and tools to achieve the intended finished look and structure:
- Yarn: Bernat Blanket Yarn, Bernat Baby Blanket, or Bernat Blanket Brights in various colors. These are chunky to super chunky weight yarns that create a soft, plush fabric ideal for toys. The pattern specifies the largest ball size needed for each color; designer Sarah Quillen recommends purchasing the large 10.5 oz (300g) balls for color availability.
- Hook: US K 10.5 / 6.5mm crochet hook
- Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker for tracking round progression, polyester fiberfill stuffing for filling the toy, and 2 safety eyes (size specified within the pattern)
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Fish pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for amigurumi (stuffed toy) construction. The garment is worked in the round using continuous spirals, meaning rounds are joined seamlessly without breaking yarn between rounds. This technique creates a smooth, uninterrupted fabric surface ideal for a toy.
The pattern emphasizes maintaining sufficiently tight stitches to prevent gapping when the toy is stuffed with fiberfill. Gauge is not critical for this project, provided stitches are tight enough to contain the stuffing without showing gaps. If excessive gapping occurs or stitches become too tight to work comfortably, the designer recommends adjusting tension first, then trying a different hook size if needed.
Construction and Design
As a toy project, the Fish incorporates safety elements including safety eyes for secure attachment. The stuffed construction method combined with tight stitching ensures durability and safety for this handmade toy.
