What is Being Made

The First Class Illusion is a decorative knitted wall-hanging designed by Steve Plummer and Pat Ashforth for Woolly Thoughts. This piece features an illusion knitting technique that depicts a First Class postage stamp design. The finished wall-hanging measures 68 cm (27 inches) in width and 80 cm (32 inches) in height, making it a substantial decorative textile suitable for display on walls or as part of larger projects such as afghans.

Knitting Techniques and Illusion Effects

This intermediate-level project employs illusion knitting, a specialized technique that creates optical effects through strategic color changes and stitch placement. The illusion effect works best when the knitting is executed with a tight tension, which enhances the visual impact of the design. The pattern instructions provide both a complete small chart and a larger version divided into four sections to accommodate the complexity of the design and make it easier to follow during knitting.

The technique requires working with two contrasting colors throughout the piece. The designer used Khaki and Parchment in the photographed example, though any two contrasting color combinations would work effectively with this pattern. The interplay between these colors creates the illusion effect that makes the First Class stamp design appear to emerge from the knitted surface.

Stitches and Stitch Structure

The primary stitch used in this project is garter stitch, which forms the foundation of the wall-hanging. Garter stitch—created by knitting every row—provides the dense, textured base necessary for the illusion knitting technique to function properly. This stitch choice also contributes to the fabric's ability to be worked at a tight tension without distortion.

Yarn and Materials

The First Class Illusion can be created using multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for different project outcomes:

• Double Knitting (DK) yarn—the weight used in the photographed example
• 4-ply yarn
• 6-ply yarn
• Sport weight yarn

The pattern requires approximately 420 metres (460 yards) of each of the two contrasting colors, with additional yardage needed for the border. Yarn weight selection will affect the overall finished size of the wall-hanging, with lighter weights producing smaller pieces and heavier weights creating larger finished dimensions.

Needles and Tension

The pattern recommends using smaller needles than normally paired with your chosen yarn weight to achieve the tight tension that makes the illusion effect most effective. For wall-hangings, knitters can work at maximum tightness without concern for garment wearability. However, if the panel is intended for use in an afghan or other project requiring flexibility, a slightly softer tension may be necessary.

The target tension is slightly more than 5 stitches to the inch when measured over garter stitch, which will produce the dimensions specified above. Achieving proper tension is crucial for both the illusion effect and the final size of the completed piece.
