Materials and Gauge

Yarn Requirements: First Baby Booties calls for worsted weight yarn that meets specific gauge requirements of 22 stitches and 38 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in garter stitch. The pattern requires approximately 70 to 100 metres (77 to 109 yards) of yarn per pair of booties, depending on the selected size. Suitable yarn should fall within the range of 105 to 125 metres (114 to 136 yards) per 50 grams.

The original pattern was designed using Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino in colorways Powder or Pearl Grey, or Knitting for Olive Double Soft Merino in colorway Sand. These merino options provide softness and breathability ideal for delicate baby skin.

Needles and Notions: You will need 4mm (US size 6) double-pointed needles (DPNs) or circular needles for working in the magic loop technique. If using the magic loop method, one extra 4mm needle is required. Knitters may adjust to smaller or larger needles to achieve the required gauge. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, three stitch markers, and optionally a round counter for tracking progress through the pattern.
