Product Description
The scarf starts on the top long edge with a “starting sequence” instead of the traditional starting chain. No worries starting on the long edge, you do not have to crochet a massively long starting chain, FSC or FDC. Then, you will crochet the first row along the starting sequence. Subsequent rows decrease down to the bottom point. It’s that easy! And it’s quick to crochet and is great for gifting.
Finding Calm uses one skein of at least 250 yards of DK weight yarn for a scarf you plan to wet block, or use about 310 yards of DK weight yarn for a larger scarf that you can wet block or leave unblocked.
I chose one skein of the lovely hand-dyed Optimum DK by Savvy Skeins in the color “Emerald Road”.

Finding Calm Scarf by CJ Brady Designs
Project Overview
Finding Calm is a crochet scarf pattern designed as a stress-relieving project that prioritizes simplicity and meditative crafting. Inspired by the philosophy of finding peace amid life's chaos, this scarf features an easy-to-memorize stitch pattern that creates a shallow triangle silhouette, making it both comfortable to wrap and wear and enjoyable to create. The design philosophy centers on providing a no-stress crochet experience suitable for crafters seeking a calming creative outlet.
Construction and Technique
The Finding Calm scarf employs an innovative construction method that eliminates the need for a traditional long starting chain. Instead of crocheting a massively long foundation chain or using techniques like FSC (Foundation Single Crochet) or FDC (Foundation Double Crochet), this pattern begins with a specialized "starting sequence" worked along the top long edge of the finished scarf. This approach reduces the initial setup stress and makes the project more approachable for intermediate-level crocheters.
The scarf's shallow triangle shape is achieved through the stitch pattern, which is intentionally designed to be easy to memorize and repeat. This repetitive, rhythmic structure contributes to the meditative quality of the project, allowing crafters to work without constantly consulting pattern instructions once the sequence is established.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes a straightforward stitch sequence that forms the basis of the shallow triangle construction. The easy-to-memorize nature of the stitch pattern makes it suitable for intermediate crocheters who want a project that challenges without overwhelming. The first row is worked following the initial starting sequence, establishing the foundation for the remaining rows.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Finding Calm is designed to work with DK weight yarn, a lightweight option that creates a delicate, drape-friendly fabric ideal for a scarf. DK weight yarn provides enough structure to showcase stitch definition while remaining comfortable for wrapping around the neck. The pattern requires a crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn, typically in the range of US sizes E/4 (3.5mm) to F/5 (3.75mm), though specific hook size recommendations would be detailed in the full pattern instructions.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, Finding Calm assumes basic crochet knowledge including familiarity with fundamental stitches and the ability to read pattern instructions. The intermediate designation reflects the custom starting sequence and the need to understand how the triangle shaping develops, rather than complex stitch techniques. Despite the intermediate rating, the pattern's emphasis on stress-free crafting and easy-to-memorize repeats makes it accessible to motivated beginners seeking a gentle challenge.
Finished Design Features
The shallow triangle shape of the finished scarf provides practical styling versatility. This silhouette drapes elegantly when wrapped and worn, offering a modern aesthetic that complements various outfits and occasions. The lightweight DK weight construction ensures the scarf is comfortable for extended wear without adding bulk.
