Product Description
Filigree Flowers is a delicate shawl comprised of simple shells for the border and for the main body of the shawl, Solomons/Lovers Knots.
Nestled in between the knots are 4 petal flowers. Photo tutorials show how to create these delicate flowers.
Lovers/Solomons knot may look a difficult stitch but it is in fact a simple stitch and works up quickly. The results of combining shells and knots together is quite satisfying.
The pattern is a four row repeat and best results are achieved with a light fingering weight yarn. I used Alize Angora Gold Simli for mine. Success has been achieved with this pattern in several other yarns including Lion Brand Shawl in a ball.
Filigree Flowers Shawl by Auburncraft Crochet Design
What Is Being Made
The Filigree Flowers Shawl is an intermediate-level crochet shawl designed by Sue Stapleton of Auburncraft. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 60 inches (152 cm) long and 15 inches (38.1 cm) wide, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.
Yarn and Materials
This shawl pattern uses approximately 1,038 yards (950 meters) of light fingering weight 3-ply yarn. The original design calls for 2 balls of Alize Angora Gold in Colour 27 (product code 330835), with each 100-gram ball providing approximately 547 yards (500 meters) of yarn. The pattern includes suitable yarn substitutes for crafters seeking alternatives: Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball, Lion Brand Summer Breeze, and Patons Lace, all of which work well with the lace weight specifications of this project.
Tools and Equipment
A 5mm (size H) crochet hook is required to work this pattern. The gauge is measured at 7 shells to 4 inches (10 cm) across the bottom edge of the shawl, and also 7 shells to 4 inches (10 cm) measured from the bottom of a shell along the side edge.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
The Filigree Flowers Shawl employs a variety of fundamental and decorative crochet stitches to create its intricate design. The pattern utilizes the following stitches and techniques:
- Chain (Ch) – The foundation stitch used to create the base of the pattern
- Single Crochet (Sc) – A basic short stitch used for structure and shaping
- Double Crochet (Dc) – A taller stitch that adds height and drape to the fabric
- Slip Stitch (Slst) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Solomon's Knot (Lk) – Also known as lover's knot, this decorative stitch creates the delicate, openwork quality characteristic of filigree patterns
- Shell Stitches – Multiple stitches worked into the same stitch or space to create the shell motifs that form the foundation of this shawl's design
- Skipping (Sk) – Strategic skipping of stitches creates the lacy, open construction
- Repeats (Rep) – Pattern repeats allow the filigree flower motif to be worked consistently throughout the shawl
Design and Construction
This intermediate-level pattern combines delicate lace-weight yarn with openwork crochet techniques to create a shawl with visual depth and elegant drape. The use of shells and Solomon's knot stitches produces the filigree flower aesthetic that gives this design its name. The shawl's dimensions and construction make it suitable for various wearing styles and occasions.
