Figure Skate Booties Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
The Figure Skate Booties Crochet Pattern from Irish Hooks & Yarn creates adorable miniature ice skate-themed booties designed for infants and toddlers. This downloadable PDF pattern by designer Sue McCullion produces a pair of decorative booties that resemble figure skates, complete with laces. The pattern includes multiple size options ranging from Preemie and Newborn through 12 to 24 months, allowing crafters to customize the project for different baby ages and stages.
Techniques Used
This crochet pattern is designed for advanced beginners who have foundational skills in crocheting in the round and reading crochet patterns. The project incorporates several key techniques essential to the bootie construction. Crafters will work primarily in the round to form the three-dimensional bootie shape. The pattern also requires basic sewing skills, as assembly is necessary to complete the finished booties. Proper gauge checking is emphasized as important for achieving the correct bootie size, with recommendations to adjust hook size if needed to match the specified gauge.
Stitches Used
The Figure Skate Booties pattern utilizes a focused selection of fundamental crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch) – used for foundation and pattern construction
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building bootie structure
- Single crochet in back loop (sc-blo) – creates textural variation and ribbed effects
- Single crochet in front loop (sc-flo) – provides additional stitch variation
- Half-double crochet two together (hdc2tog) – used for decreasing and shaping
- Back post double crochet (bpdc) – adds dimensional detail and texture to the design
Materials and Yarn
The Figure Skate Booties pattern calls for Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight yarn in three coordinating colors: buff, white, and light grey. One skein of each color is required, with each skein containing 7.0 ounces and 364 yards per 198 grams. For the 3 to 6 months size, approximately three ounces of yarn total is needed to complete a pair of skates. The 12 to 24 months size requires a small amount of polyester fiberfill for stuffing.
Hook Sizes by Bootie Size
The pattern provides specific crochet hook recommendations for each bootie size to ensure proper fit and proportions:
- Preemie to Newborn – E/3.5 mm hook
- Newborn to 3 months – F/3.75 mm hook
- 3 to 6 months and 6 to 12 months – G/4.25 mm hook
- 12 to 24 months – H/5.0 mm hook
The pattern notes that a Boye G/4.25 mm hook was used for testing, and emphasizes that using a smaller G/4.0 mm hook will produce a smaller bootie. Gauge checking and hook size adjustment are recommended for best results.
