Product Description
Cast on a quartet of cheery Festive Mice characters filled with details. With this knitting pattern you can make four mice: a Fairy, Santa, Caroller and Skier. You could make a mouse Christmas diorama, or add hanging hooks to make them as tree decorations. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the mice are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round), and the arms, feet and tails are i-cord pieces knitted on two DPNs. For confident beginners and above, techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Festive Mice Decorations Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a collection of festive mice decorations designed by Amanda Berry. The pattern features multiple mouse characters, each with distinct holiday themes including a Santa mouse, a caroler mouse, a fairy mouse, and a skier mouse. These are small knitted toys intended for seasonal decoration rather than functional garments.
Craft and Primary Technique
The Festive Mice Decorations are created using knitting as the primary craft method. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond beginner level. The construction involves knitting small three-dimensional toy pieces that are then assembled and embellished to create finished decorative mice.
Stitches and Knitting Methods
The pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate for toy construction. The mice are worked using single pointed needles for the main body pieces, with double-pointed needles (DPNs) employed for smaller components. Seaming techniques are used to join the knitted pieces together, creating the three-dimensional structure of each mouse. The pattern incorporates shaping through increases and decreases to form the distinctive mouse body, head, and limbs.
Yarn and Materials
The mice are knitted in DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting, light worsted weight, or 8 ply). The pattern specifies 100% acrylic DK yarn, with the photographed samples created using Hayfield Bonus DK in five coordinating shades: White, Signal Red, Oatmeal, Silver Grey, and Black. Approximately 100g of yarn in each color is required. A similar quality DK weight yarn in these colors is recommended as a suitable substitute.
Needles and Notions Required
- 3.5mm (US 4) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm for main body knitting
- 3.5mm (US 4) double-pointed needles (DPNs) for smaller components
- Darning or tapestry needle for seaming pieces together
- 200g bag of toy filling for stuffing the knitted mice
- 6mm toy safety eyes (two per mouse)
- Black embroidery thread or floss (up to 2 metres total) for embellishment details
- Wooden coffee stirrers or lolly sticks for ski construction on the skier mouse
- Cocktail sticks for ski poles and wand accessories
- Superglue for securing wooden and stick components
- White felt fabric in a 5cm x 3.5cm rectangle for details
- White cotton thread and sewing needle for attaching felt and other embellishments
Pattern Scope and Variations
The pattern includes instructions for creating multiple distinct mouse characters, each with unique holiday-themed accessories and costumes. The Santa mouse, caroler mouse, fairy mouse, and skier mouse each require specific embellishments and notions beyond the basic knitted components. This multi-design approach allows crafters to create a complete festive display of coordinated decorative mice using variations of the same fundamental knitting techniques.
