Product Description
Fergus the Fox is such a handsome chap! He likes to relax with a cup of tea after a day in the garden.
Pattern includes waistcoat.
Fergus measures approx. 15 inches tall, and 9 inches seated.
Special Technique/s: Kitchener stitch/grafting; Loop stitch
Gauge is not essential for this project.
As this pattern uses loop stitch, you can substitute the white/cream 8ply with double strand 4ply for a fluffier finish. You will therefore need 70m of 4ply.
You will also need about 6 inches in black 8ply for the nose.
Fergus the Fox: Knitted Toy Design
What Is Being Made
Fergus the Fox is an intermediate-level knitted toy designed by Vicki Stewart for Hillandbenz. This is a stuffed animal project created using the knitting craft, suitable for crafters with some experience beyond beginner level. The finished toy is a charming fox character intended for display or play.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to construct the three-dimensional toy form:
- Stocking Stitch (St-st): The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat surface ideal for toy construction
- Increases (Incr): Shaping technique where an extra stitch is made by knitting into both the front and back loop of a single stitch, used to expand sections of the toy
- Decreases (skpo): Slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over—a left-leaning decrease used to shape and reduce stitches
- Loop Stitch: An optional decorative technique creating textured loops, similar to an increase but with a different finish, potentially used for the fox's fur texture
- Turning: A technique for working in specific directions by manipulating yarn and needle position, allowing for directional shaping within the toy
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including K (knit), P (purl), St/s (stitch/stitches), Alt (alternate), Tog (together), Patt (pattern), and Incr (increase). These foundational stitches combine to create the toy's structure.
Materials and Yarn
Fergus the Fox is worked in DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8ply in the pattern), with color work creating the fox's distinctive features:
- 100 meters of 8ply yarn in rust (primary color for the fox's body)
- 65 meters of 8ply yarn in dark brown (for markings and details)
- 35 meters of 8ply yarn in white or cream (for facial features and accents)
- Alternative option: 70 meters of 4ply yarn used in double strand for substitution
- Small piece (approximately 6 inches) of 8ply yarn in black (for additional details)
- Needles: 3.25mm knitting needles
- Additional supplies: Stitch holder or spare needle, washable toy stuffing for filling, black yarn for embroidered features, and optional 2 tiny black buttons for eyes
Construction Notes
The toy is constructed using a downloadable PDF pattern format, making it accessible for independent crafters. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that while basic knitting knowledge is required, the pattern incorporates shaping techniques and color work that challenge developing skills. The use of washable toy stuffing and secure fastening methods ensures the finished toy is durable and safe.
