Product Description

Feathers- Crochet Pattern

I originally made these feathers for my daughter for one of her art projects. People liked them, and asked for the pattern, so here it is!

The pattern is straight forward and not too technical. The trickiest part, if your not familiar with how to do it, is attaching the yarn to make the vane, however I have included instructions on how to do this, and some pictures as a guide. For this reason I would suggest this pattern is beginners/intermediate level.

The pattern includes instructions to make 4 different sized feathers, 26, 22, 17, and 12.5 cm in length.

Suggested Yarn: Double Knit

Pattern Level: Beginners to intermediate

Pattern supplied as a digital download.

This pattern is written in UK terminology.

If you have any questions about this pattern please do get in touch.

Happy Hooking!

Feathers Crochet Pattern by Seòlta Hooker

What Is Being Made

Feathers is a crochet pattern designed by Seòlta Hooker that creates realistic decorative feather motifs. The pattern includes four different size options—Tall (26 cm), Medium (22 cm), Small (17 cm), and Tiny (12.5 cm)—allowing crafters to create feathers of varying dimensions for different projects and applications. These crocheted feathers can be used as standalone decorative elements, incorporated into larger designs, or assembled into mixed-media craft projects.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is a crochet pattern written in UK crochet terminology. The pattern demonstrates intermediate-level crochet skills, making it suitable for crafters with some experience beyond basic stitches. The feather construction is built from a central stem structure called the Rachis, which forms the foundation of each feather design. The technique involves working from a foundation chain and building outward to create the characteristic shape and texture of natural feathers.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The Feathers pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches and techniques written in UK terminology:

  • Chain stitch (ch) - Used to create the initial foundation and the central Rachis (stem) of each feather
  • Slip stitch (ss) - Applied to join rounds and create structural connections throughout the pattern
  • Stitch (st) - The general building blocks of the feather structure
  • Fasten off (FO) - Technique for securing and finishing the completed feather

The pattern begins with a starting chain of varying lengths depending on desired feather size, then progresses through rounds of stitching to develop the feather's form and texture.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Feathers pattern calls for Double Knit (DK) weight yarn, which provides an appropriate thickness for creating detailed feather structures at intermediate scale. The pattern requires one ball each of three coordinating yarn colors:

  • Dark Brown
  • Light Brown
  • Cream

The color palette creates natural, realistic feather tones with depth and dimension. Cream yarn is used for the central Rachis (stem), while the brown shades build the feather body.

Tools and Notions

Beyond yarn, the Feathers pattern requires:

  • 4mm crochet hook - The appropriate size for working with Double Knit yarn
  • Tapestry needle - Essential for sewing in yarn ends and finishing the completed feathers
  • Wire brush - A specialized finishing tool for texturing and fluffing the completed feather to enhance its realistic appearance

Pattern Structure and Sizing

The pattern accommodates four distinct size options, each beginning with a different foundation chain length using Cream yarn:

  • Large feathers - Begin with a chain of 45 stitches, finishing at approximately 26 cm in length
  • Medium feathers - Begin with a chain of 35 stitches, finishing at approximately 22 cm in length
  • Small feathers - Begin with a chain of 25 stitches, finishing at approximately 17 cm in length
  • Tiny feathers - Begin with a chain of 18 stitches, finishing at approximately 12.5 cm in length

Crafters select their desired size before beginning and work from the corresponding starting chain length, making the pattern flexible for various creative applications.
