What Is Being Made

The Fat Kitty is a loose-fitting raglan sweater designed for children ages 1 through 10 years. This top-down knit garment features a playful design with an intarsia section, making it a charming addition to any child's wardrobe. Available in six size options with chest measurements ranging from 48 cm (19.2 inches) for age 1 to 70 cm (28 inches) for age 10, the sweater accommodates growing children across a wide age range.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Fat Kitty sweater is constructed using a top-down raglan method, a popular approach in modern knitwear design that allows for easy fitting adjustments and minimal seaming. The garment is worked in the round from the neckline down to the underarms, creating a seamless body section. Once the underarm point is reached, the knitter transitions to flat knitting to accommodate the intarsia colorwork section, which features the design's distinctive visual element. This combination of circular and flat knitting techniques requires intermediate-level skills and provides an engaging knitting experience with varied construction methods.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Fat Kitty employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for an intermediate project:

  • Knit stitch (k) — the primary stitch forming the fabric base
  • Garter stitch — created by knitting every row, often used for textured sections or edgings
  • Knit two together (k2tog) — a right-leaning decrease used to shape the raglan lines
  • Kfb (knit into front and back) — an increase technique that creates new stitches by working into both the front and back loops of a single stitch, essential for the raglan shaping that gradually expands the garment
  • Intarsia — a colorwork technique used to create the design motif, requiring the management of multiple yarn colors within specific sections of the knitting

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Fat Kitty is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight that creates a fabric with good drape and definition for children's garments. The pattern specifies Filatura di Crosa Zara, a quality DK wool yarn with a yardage of 125 meters (136.7 yards) per 50-gram (1.76 ounce) ball. Total yardage requirements vary by size: age 1 requires 375 meters (410 yards) of main color, while age 10 requires 885 meters (968 yards). Additional yarn in contrasting colors will be needed for the intarsia section, though specific yardage for contrast colors is not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt. Standard knitting needles appropriate for DK yarn are required, along with an end-of-round marker for tracking the beginning of each circular round.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Fat Kitty sweater is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction methods. The combination of top-down raglan shaping, the transition between circular and flat knitting, and the intarsia colorwork section provide an engaging challenge that builds technical proficiency without overwhelming newer knitters.
