What is Being Made
Fairwyn socks are a pair of knitted socks designed to keep feet warm and comfortable. The name Fairwyn is an Irish name meaning the light of the sun, reflecting the socks' purpose of providing warmth when natural sunlight cannot. These socks are suitable for everyday wear and are designed to be relaxed and comfortable on the foot.
Craft and Techniques
Fairwyn socks are created using the knitting craft, worked in the round on small circumference needles. The pattern features a distinctive Tuck stitch pattern on the leg and instep, which creates texture and visual interest. A key feature of this design is that the stitch pattern is reversible, meaning the socks can be worn either way and will always appear correct, adding versatility to the finished garment.
The sock construction includes a traditional Eye of the Partridge heel flap, a classic heel technique that creates a durable, reinforced heel suitable for everyday wear. This heel method is known for its strength and longevity, making it an excellent choice for functional socks.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch – the primary stitch used to establish gauge and form the base of the sock
- Tuck stitch – the decorative pattern element worked on the leg and instep
- Knit (K) – fundamental knit stitch
- Knit 2 together (K2tog) – a decrease stitch used for shaping
Materials and Specifications
Fairwyn socks are worked using 2.5 mm (US 1.5) needles or the size required to obtain proper gauge, in your preferred style for working small circumference knitting in the round. Circular needles, double-pointed needles, or magic loop methods are all suitable for this project.
The pattern calls for approximately 120–400 metres (130–440 yards) of fingering weight (4 ply) yarn, depending on the desired sock size and leg length. The design works beautifully with speckled and multi-coloured knit yarns. The sample shown uses Knit Picks Hawthorne yarn.
Additional materials required include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and 2 stitch markers (or more if you prefer to mark individual pattern repeats for easier tracking).
Difficulty Level
Fairwyn socks are rated as a beginner-friendly project, making them an excellent choice for knitters new to sock construction. The straightforward Tuck stitch pattern and classic heel technique provide an accessible introduction to sock knitting without overwhelming complexity.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 34 stitches and 40 rounds over 10 centimetres (4 inches) in stocking stitch, worked in the relaxed state. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished socks fit correctly and have the intended drape and comfort.
