Fairly Fractal Crochet Blanket by Nickie Chapin
Project Overview
Fairly Fractal is a downloadable crochet pattern for a hexagon-shaped blanket throw designed by Nickie Chapin. This intermediate-level project creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 70 inches side to side and 80 inches point to point, making it an ideal size for a cozy throw blanket or lap blanket. The design features a fractal-inspired construction with a distinctive hexagon finish that remains manageable in size while delivering visual interest and complexity.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The Fairly Fractal pattern employs intermediate crochet techniques that build upon fundamental skills. While some rounds in the pattern instructions may appear detailed and complex when reading through the written directions, the designer emphasizes that most rounds are significantly easier to execute than they initially seem. The pattern is written with beginner-friendly detail to ensure accessibility, though the overall project is classified as intermediate difficulty. The hexagon construction method allows crafters to work in rounds, building the blanket outward from the center point.
Yarn and Materials
This project requires a total of 3,410 yards of yarn worked with a size 8/H (5mm) crochet hook. The pattern calls for two types of mercerized cotton yarn from Cascade:
- Cascade Paradigm Shift (100% mercerized cotton; 7.05 oz, 371 yds per skein) — Color: Deep Dive (2 skeins, 1,950 yards total)
- Cascade Noble Cotton (100% mercerized cotton; 3.5 oz, 220 yds per skein) — Three colorway options: Anemone (51 skeins, 750 yards), Deep Lagoon (40 skeins, 455 yards), and Tropical Green (39 skeins, 255 yards)
The mercerized cotton fiber content provides a smooth, lustrous finish with excellent stitch definition, making it ideal for displaying the geometric fractal pattern. The yarn weights used are DK and worsted weight, offering good drape and structure for a blanket project.
Customization and Color Options
The Fairly Fractal pattern offers significant flexibility in color selection. Crafters can use as many or as few colors as desired, allowing for personalization based on preference, yarn availability, or stash utilization. The pattern instructions provide specific yardage requirements for each color in the original design, but the modular nature of the construction supports creative color experimentation.
Finished Dimensions
The completed blanket measures approximately 70 inches from side to side and 80 inches from point to point, creating a hexagonal shape that works beautifully as a throw blanket for sofas, chairs, or beds. This size makes it substantial enough to provide warmth and coverage while remaining manageable for storage and care.
