Product Description
Looking for a cute summer top for your little girl? Or perhaps a gift? Fair Lady is a quick and fun knit, worked top down and finishing everything while you go - when you’re done with the body, you’re really done! A great project for both solids and self striping yarns.
Note: Several test knitters have expanded the back lace section to cover the whole back, a lovely idea! Just remember that you're gauge is probably looser in lace than stockinette, so when doing this you should decrease the number of sts in that section. See testers notes for tips!

Fair Lady Summer Top for Girls
What is Being Made
Fair Lady is a charming summer knit top designed for young girls, available in sizes ranging from newborn through 12 years old. This garment is specifically crafted as a quick and enjoyable knitting project, making it an excellent choice for both gift-giving and personal projects. The design works beautifully with both solid-colored yarns and self-striping varieties, offering versatility in visual presentation while maintaining the same construction method.
Construction Method and Approach
This top is worked using a top-down construction technique, which is a highly efficient approach for garment knitting. The top-down method allows knitters to begin at the neckline and work progressively downward toward the hem. A key advantage of this Fair Lady design is that all finishing is completed as you knit—when the body is complete, the garment is essentially finished. This streamlined approach eliminates the need for extensive seaming or additional finishing steps, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a satisfying, quick completion.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Fair Lady pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The core stitches used in this project include:
- Knit (K) - the basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric structure
- Purl (P) - the reverse of the knit stitch, used for textural variation and pattern work
Construction techniques incorporate cast-on (CO) methods to establish the initial stitches and bind-off (BO) techniques to secure the final edges. The pattern utilizes marker placement throughout the knitting process, including standard markers (sm = slip marker) and designated markers A and B (pmA, pmB) to help organize stitch sections and track pattern repeats. These markers are essential for maintaining proper shaping and ensuring accurate garment construction across the various size options.
Yarn and Needle Specifications
Fair Lady accommodates multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility in material selection. The pattern calls for fingering weight yarn in 3-ply or 4-ply configurations, as well as sport weight options. Yardage requirements vary by size: newborn through 5-year sizes require approximately 100 to 300 meters of fingering weight yarn, while larger sizes (6 years through 12 years) require approximately 320 to 420 meters. Knitting is worked on 3 mm knitting needles, or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge for proper fit and fabric drape.
Size Range and Fit
The Fair Lady pattern offers comprehensive sizing to accommodate growing children. Chest measurements range from 15 inches (37 cm) for newborns to 26.5 inches (67 cm) for 8-year-olds, with additional sizes extending through 12 years old. This extensive size range makes Fair Lady an adaptable pattern for multiple children or for following a child's growth over several years.
