F-8 Sweet Curacao Bag – Free Knitting Pattern by Melissa Morgan-Oakes Using Valley Yarns Berkshire

The Sweet Curacao Felted Bag is a free, downloadable knitting pattern designed by Melissa Morgan-Oakes and published by Valley Yarns. Inspired by the vivid blues and greens of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela — the island the natives call Dushi Korsou, or Sweet Curaçao — this striking tote is worked in a bold gradient of ocean-inspired colors. It is described as fast and easy to knit, making it an ideal project for advanced beginners who want to explore felting for the first time, while still producing a polished, professional-looking finished object.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a large felted carry-all bag, generously sized for everyday use whether you are island hopping or city bopping. The bag is constructed flat in separate panels that are then seamed together before felting. Because felting shrinks the fabric significantly, the knitted pieces are worked much larger than the intended finished dimensions.

  • Dimensions before felting: 18 inches high × 16 inches long × 6 inches deep
  • Approximate dimensions after felting: 12 inches high × 14 inches long × 4 inches deep

The finished bag features a structured, rectangular silhouette with substantial depth, making it a practical and roomy carryall. Two I-cord handles are worked separately and attached, completing the design.

Techniques Used

Felting

Felting — sometimes called fulling — is the process of agitating a knitted wool fabric in hot water so that the individual fibers interlock and compress, creating a dense, sturdy fabric that no longer shows individual stitches. Because the fibers shrink and mat together, felted items are far more durable and structured than unfelted knitting. Valley Yarns Berkshire, a worsted-weight wool blend, is well suited to felting because it contains natural animal fiber that responds readily to heat and agitation. The dramatic size reduction — from 18 inches to approximately 12 inches in height — is a hallmark of the felting process and is fully accounted for in the pattern's construction.

Working Flat

The bag panels are worked flat, meaning they are knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round. This approach creates separate front, back, and side panels that are later joined. Working flat is straightforward and familiar to most knitters, contributing to the pattern's advanced beginner difficulty rating.

Seaming with Mattress Stitch

Once the panels are complete, the bag is assembled using mattress stitch — a professional seaming technique worked with a tapestry needle that creates an invisible, flat join on the right side of the fabric. The pattern specifies using one strand of color A for seaming, ensuring the join blends cleanly with the bag's base color before felting conceals the seam entirely.

I-Cord Handles

The two handles are each made as a 4-stitch I-cord, 40 inches long, worked with 2 strands of yarn held together. I-cord is a simple technique worked on double-pointed needles (or the tips of a circular needle) in which a tiny tube of knitting is produced by sliding stitches back to the beginning of the needle and knitting across without turning. The handles alternate colors to echo the gradient striping of the bag body, tying the whole design together visually.

Stitches Used

  • Knit and purl stitches — the fundamental building blocks for working the flat panels
  • I-cord — a four-stitch tubular cord technique used for the handles
  • Mattress stitch — used during finishing to seam the panels together
  • Loose bind-off — specified at the top of the side panels to prevent tight edges that could distort during felting

Color Work and Striping

A defining feature of the Sweet Curacao Bag is its gradient stripe sequence, which moves through a range of ocean-inspired colors labeled A through F in the pattern. Rather than using a single strand of each color, the pattern achieves smooth color transitions by
