This is only the second time that I’ve purchased a pattern ( I usually download patterns which are free). I’m experienced in crochet and would not expect a pattern described as ‘intermediate’ to present any problems. Although most of the pattern was very straightforward, the pattern was a little too vague and open to interpretation at crucial shaping points.. In the end I ignored the pattern and used my own experience to overcome the issues. I’m pleased with the outcome.

Everyday Hoody - Child Sizes by Sincerely Pam
What is Being Made
The Everyday Hoody is a child-sized pullover sweater with a hood, designed by Pamela Dajczak of Sincerely Pam. This crochet pattern accommodates children in sizes 2 through 10, with finished chest circumferences ranging from 25 inches to 33 inches and lengths from 14 inches to 19 inches (measured from nape of neck to hem). The garment is constructed as a practical, wearable piece suitable for everyday wear.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is worked entirely in crochet, a fabric-creation technique using a single hook to form interlocking loops of yarn. Crochet is ideal for creating structured garments like hoodies because it produces a fabric with excellent stitch definition and durability. The pattern uses a J (6.0 mm) hook and is classified as beginner to intermediate in difficulty, making it accessible to newer crocheters while still offering some shaping challenges through strategic stitch increases.
Stitches Used
The Everyday Hoody employs fundamental crochet stitches that form the foundation of the garment:
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create the base loops for starting rows and rounds
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – the primary stitch throughout the pattern, creating a medium-height, dense fabric that provides structure and warmth
- Single Crochet (sc) – used for shaping and finishing details
- Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping the garment
- Slip Stitch (slst) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Back Loop Only (BLO) – a technique where the hook enters only the back loop of a stitch, creating textured ribbing or decorative edges
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for #4 worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and creates a substantial, durable fabric suitable for children's wear. The sample garment was created using Bernat Premium yarn. Yardage requirements vary by child size: size 2 requires approximately 575 yards, size 4 requires 600 yards, size 6 requires 650 yards, size 8 requires 715 yards, and size 10 requires 800 yards. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and a measuring tape for checking gauge and finished measurements.
Gauge and Construction Details
The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 half double crochets and 9 rows measured over a 4-inch by 4-inch swatch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished garment matches the intended measurements. The hoody is constructed in the round using a join method, beginning with a chain foundation that is carefully joined without twisting to create a seamless circular base. Strategic increases (created by working multiple stitches into the same stitch) are placed at specific intervals to shape the garment and accommodate the hood opening and body shaping.
