Product Description
The Evergreen Cable Cowl features entwined cables with diamonds and rope cables. The diamonds are either filled with a texture pattern or reverse stocking stitch. Knitted in DK or Worsted yarn to match our gauge/tension.
The cowl has three circumference sizes and can either be short (approx 7" tall) or tall (approx 11" tall).
The cable stitches are simple but you do have to pay attention.
Evergreen Cowl Pattern by Loraine Birchall
Project Overview
The Evergreen Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted cowl pattern designed by Loraine Birchall for Woolly Madly Deeply Ltd. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a cabled cowl design suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the beginner level. The pattern was released in October 2020 and comes in three different sizes to accommodate various neck measurements.
What Is Being Made
The Evergreen Cowl is a cabled cowl—a neck accessory that combines warmth with decorative cable stitch work. Cowls are tubular garments worn around the neck and shoulders, offering versatility as they can be worn in multiple ways depending on personal preference and styling needs. This particular design features cable knit detailing, making it both a functional and visually interesting accessory.
Sizes and Finished Dimensions
- Size 1: 18-22 inch circumference
- Size 2: 22-26 inch circumference
- Size 3: 26-30 inch circumference
Knitting Techniques
The Evergreen Cowl employs cable knitting techniques as its primary decorative method. Cable stitches involve crossing groups of stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like textures that add visual depth and dimension to the finished piece. This technique requires intermediate knitting skills, as it involves working with cable needles and maintaining consistent tension across the twisted stitches. The pattern is worked in the round, which is typical for cowl construction and creates a seamless tubular garment.
Stitches Used
While the complete stitch breakdown is not fully detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the design centers on cable stitches as the primary stitch pattern. Cable work typically incorporates knit and purl stitches in combination with cable crosses to achieve the characteristic twisted appearance. The pattern may also include ribbing or stockinette stitch sections to frame or complement the cable work.
Yarn and Materials
The Evergreen Cowl pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, making it adaptable to different preferences and stash materials:
- Recommended Yarn Weights: DK, Worsted, and Aran
- Yardage Requirements:
- Size 1: 200-220 yards (or 150-180 yards for short cowl version)
- Size 2: 340 yards (or 240 yards for short cowl version)
- Size 3: 360 yards (or 250 yards for short cowl version)
- Sample Yarn: The pattern sample was knitted with Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK in the colorway Gorse
- Alternative Yarn Option: Lanas Stop York Merino is suggested as a suitable alternative yarn for this pattern
Pattern Format and Delivery
The Evergreen Cowl is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it immediately accessible for digital viewing and printing. The pattern document consists of 7 pages and includes pattern instructions, materials lists, and imagery to guide knitters through the construction process.
