Product Description

This is the pattern for a crochet scarf. I do have this pattern available for free on my website if you would prefer that option. The link is down below, but I’ve made it available for people to download as well for $1 on Ravelry.

There is also a video tutorial for the pattern available on my YouTube channel at Crochet Eva Scarf Tutorial.

I’ve used 8 ply cotton and a 5.5mm crochet hook but you can use different sizes depending on what you’re most comfortable with.

  • Any thickness yarn, I used 8 ply yarn which is light worsted in the US and double knit in the UK.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 5.5mm hook.
  • A darning needle to weave in ends.
  • Scissors.

Eva Scarf by Kerri's Crochet

What Is Being Made

The Eva Scarf is a beginner-friendly crochet scarf pattern designed by Kerri's Crochet. This scarf is named after the designer's grandmother, who taught her to crochet, making it a meaningful project for crafters learning the fundamentals of crochet work. The finished scarf measures approximately 15.25cm to 20.5cm (6" to 8") wide and 1m to 2m (3' to 6') long, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various styling preferences and yarn quantities.

Techniques and Construction

The Eva Scarf employs a straightforward row-by-row construction method that alternates between two primary stitches to create visual texture and interest. The pattern begins with a foundation chain of 26 stitches or an even number of chains based on desired width. The first row is worked into the back bump of the chain stitches, establishing a neat foundation edge. Subsequent rows build upon this base using a repeating stitch pattern that combines treble crochet and double crochet stitches in an alternating sequence. This technique creates a balanced fabric with varied stitch heights that produces an attractive striped or textured appearance without requiring complex color changes or advanced techniques.

The pattern demonstrates attention to finishing details, with instructions for working into back loops on alternating rows to enhance stitch definition and texture. This beginner-appropriate approach teaches fundamental crochet skills while producing a polished final product.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
  • Double crochet (dc) – Worked in alternating positions to create texture and stitch variation
  • Treble crochet (tr) – Alternated with double crochet stitches to form the primary stitch pattern
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – Listed in abbreviations for joining and finishing techniques

Materials and Tools

The Eva Scarf pattern is designed with flexibility in yarn selection. The designer used 8 ply yarn, which is classified as DK weight (double knit in UK terminology, light worsted in US sizing). This yarn weight is ideal for beginners as it works up quickly while remaining manageable and forgiving of tension inconsistencies. The pattern accommodates any yarn thickness, allowing crafters to adjust their hook size and chain count accordingly based on their chosen yarn.

A 5.5mm crochet hook was used with the 8 ply yarn specified, though hook selection should be adjusted based on individual yarn choice and desired drape. Additional materials include a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and scissors for cutting yarn. These basic tools are standard in any crocheter's collection, making this pattern accessible to beginners with minimal equipment investment.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner pattern, the Eva Scarf is an excellent introductory project for those new to crochet. The pattern teaches fundamental stitches and techniques while producing a wearable, gift-worthy finished object. The straightforward row-by-row construction and simple stitch alternation make it manageable for learners while building confidence and muscle memory in basic crochet skills.
