Et Frais Mittens by Alicia Plummer
What Is Being Made
Et Frais is a pair of knitted mittens designed by Alicia Plummer. This intermediate-level knitting project creates fitted mittens available in three sizes: 6 inches (16 cm), 7 inches (18.5 cm), and 8 inches (20 cm) in circumference. The mittens are constructed as a complete set using a seamless, in-the-round knitting technique.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create a polished, professional finish. The mittens begin with an alternate cable cast on, which creates a sturdy, elastic edge ideal for cuff ribbing. The construction uses in-the-round knitting on double-pointed needles or circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and ensuring a seamless garment. A thumb gusset is incorporated using strategic increases to accommodate the thumb, with the gusset being built into the body of the mitten as you work upward from the cuff.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The mittens feature a combination of classic knitting stitches. The cuff begins with k1, p1 ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches), which creates elasticity and helps the mittens stay securely on the hand. The main body of the mittens is worked in Partridge Eye pattern, a textured stitch pattern that adds visual interest and depth to the finished mittens. Shaping is accomplished using k2tog (knit 2 together) decreases and m1l and m1r (make 1 left and make 1 right) increases, which are directional increases that maintain the pattern integrity throughout the gusset construction.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The pattern requires 200 to 250 yards of yarn depending on the size selected. The suggested yarn is Shalimar Yarns Breathless, a luxury blend composed of 75% merino wool, 15% cashmere, and 10% silk, available in 420-yard (384-meter) skeins. This fiber blend provides warmth, softness, and a subtle sheen.
The pattern calls for two sizes of needles to create proper gauge and fit. US size 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles or circular needles are used for the ribbed cuff, while US size 6 (4.0 mm) double-pointed needles or circular needles are used for the main body. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch when blocked, ensuring the mittens will fit properly and have the intended drape and structure.
Additional Notions
