Product Description
Esme is a stunningly beautiful jumper with cable knit detail, gorgeous shaping, flattering neckline and long sleeves. The pleated hem is emphasized with textured panels creating simple sophistication and an hourglass shape and the neckline is enhanced further with a wonderful, princess style, fold-back collar. This isn’t all this design can offer you; the pattern also includes a sleeveless and collarless version so that a significantly different garment can be made from the same pattern. Knitted on 4 mm circular needles (alternatively straight needles with circular needles for collar). Tension: 20 sts and 29 rows to 10 cm square over Stocking Stitch.
Esme Jumper by Kari-Helene Rane
What is Being Made
The Esme Jumper is a versatile knitted sweater available in both sleeved and sleeveless versions. This design offers five size options ranging from extra small to extra large, fitting bust measurements from 73 cm (29 inches) to 112 cm (44 inches). The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size Small. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a refined, wearable garment suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Esme Jumper employs fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create its structure. The main body is worked using stocking stitch, a classic knit fabric that creates a smooth, refined appearance. The pattern incorporates yarn overs (abbreviated as "yo") to create decorative textural elements throughout the design. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreasing methods, including knit two together (k2tog), slip slip knit (ssk), and slip slip knit pass over (sskpo) techniques. The design utilizes circular knitting needles for constructing the garment, with the pattern noting that circular needles are particularly recommended when picking up stitches around the neckline and armholes, though not strictly necessary for knitting the main body sections. The finished fabric benefits from light steaming to achieve proper tension and definition.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Stocking stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the jumper, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Yarn overs (yo): Decorative increases that create openwork or textural interest within the pattern
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Slip slip knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches knitwise individually, then knitting them together
- Slip slip knit pass over (sskpo): A double decrease technique involving slipping two stitches together knitwise, knitting one stitch, then passing the slipped stitches over
- Purl through back of loop: A variation that creates subtle texture modifications in specific rows
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Esme Jumper is designed to be knitted using Purl Alpaca Fine, a luxury yarn composed of 100% English Alpaca. This yarn weight falls within the DK to sport weight range, offering a refined, drape-friendly fabric suitable for close-fitting garments. The yarn provides 116 meters per 50-gram ball. Yardage requirements vary by size and version: the sleeved version requires between 9 and 13 balls (450–650 meters total depending on size), while the sleeveless version requires between 7 and 11 balls (350–550 meters total). The pattern sample was photographed in the shade Alpaca Earth. Knitting is worked on 4 mm circular knitting needles, or whatever needle size is necessary to achieve the correct tension.
Tension and Finishing
Achieving the correct tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies a tension of 20 stitches and 29 rows to a 10 cm square, measured over stocking stitch after light steaming. Knitters are advised to adjust their needle size as needed to match this tension, ensuring the finished garment fits properly and drapes as intended. The light steaming step helps set the stitches and enhances the definition of the stitch pattern.
