Emerson Beanie by Janine Myska

What Is Being Made

The Emerson Beanie is a knitted adult-sized hat designed by Janine Myska and published by Knits 'N Knots in 2019. This beginner-friendly beanie measures approximately 9¼ inches tall by 8.5 inches wide when laid flat, and stretches to fit an average adult head comfortably. The design features a two-color colorwork element, combining a main color with an accent color for visual interest.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting pattern suitable for beginners. The beanie is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques that make it an ideal project for those new to the craft. The pattern employs in-the-round knitting using circular needles, a core technique for creating seamless, tubular garments like hats. The construction method allows knitters to work continuously in rounds rather than flat pieces, resulting in a polished, professional finish without seaming.

The pattern incorporates colorwork, introducing knitters to working with multiple yarn colors in a single project. The two-color design uses a main color (MC) and an accent color (AC), allowing crafters to explore basic color techniques while maintaining beginner-level difficulty.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch throughout the body of the beanie, created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds when working in the round)
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch used during the crown shaping to gradually reduce stitches and form the top of the hat

Materials and Specifications

The Emerson Beanie requires worsted weight yarn (#4), with a total yardage of approximately 155 yards. The pattern specifies Lion Brand Vanna's Choice (100% acrylic) in two colors: 130 yards in Charcoal for the main color and 25 yards in White for the accent color. Loops & Threads Impeccable is suggested as a yarn substitute with similar weight and characteristics.

Essential tools include:

  • 6mm circular needles with a 16-inch cable (or size needed to match gauge)
  • Double-pointed needles (optional, for decrease rounds if preferred over circular needles)
  • Stitch marker for tracking round beginnings
  • Scissors and a needle for weaving in yarn ends

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 14.5 stitches and 22 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential to achieve the correct finished dimensions. Matching gauge ensures the beanie will fit properly and drape as intended.
