Emerald Handknit Top by Isabell Kraemer
What Is Being Made
Emerald is a handknit top design created by independent designer Isabell Kraemer. This garment is available in multiple sizes and offers flexibility in sleeve length, with options for both cap sleeve and long sleeve versions. The pattern provides yardage guidance for each size option, making it accessible for knitters planning their yarn purchases.
Yarn and Materials
This design is worked in DK weight yarn, requiring approximately 680 to 1180 meters (750 to 1285 yards) depending on size and sleeve length chosen. The cap sleeve version uses the lower yardage range, while the long sleeve version requires approximately 20 percent additional yarn. Any light DK weight yarn that knits to the specified gauge is suitable for this project.
The pattern calls for multiple needle sizes to accommodate different stitch densities throughout the garment:
- 4 mm (US 6) circular needles and double-pointed needles for main garment construction
- 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needles and double-pointed needles for ribbed sections
- 3 mm (US 2½) circular needles for neck finishing and buttonbands
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Emerald employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The primary stitch used throughout the garment is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. Stockinette stitch is worked differently depending on construction method: when worked flat (back and forth), it is created by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side; when worked in the round, all stitches are knitted to achieve the same appearance.
Ribbing is incorporated into the pattern, likely for cuffs, waistband, and neckline shaping, providing elasticity and structure to these areas. The use of progressively smaller needles for ribbing and finishing details is a standard technique that creates a neat, professional appearance and ensures proper fit at edges.
The pattern utilizes circular needles for seamless or nearly seamless construction and includes techniques such as placing markers to track pattern repeats and shaping, casting on to begin stitches, and binding off to finish edges securely.
Difficulty Level
This design is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with multiple needle sizes, follow shaping instructions, and manage garment construction across several sizes.
