Product Description

Merlin is my wonderfully delightful boxer, who’s usually a bundle of energy that needs to be burned. Sometimes this doesn’t always mix with the dreadful winters we get here in Edmonton, making walking Merlin a chilling experience. Cold breezes blowing down my neck color is uncomfortable and leads to much shorter walks.

Elwin is a cozy DK weight cowl that has helped remedy those gusts of wind from making its way down my collar, protecting me from the cold and allowing me to get my walks in with Merlin (which is something we both need!).

Worked both flat and in the round, Elwin consists of both written directions and charts. The pattern includes detailed instructions for the techniques used. Notes are included if you’d prefer a cowl with a bigger circumference, or a longer one – which makes this pattern incredibly easy to swap out different yarn weights/gauges for.

Elwin Cowl Pattern by rhyFlower Knits

Project Overview

Elwin is a cozy DK weight knitted cowl designed to provide warmth and protection from cold winter winds. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a functional neck accessory that combines comfort with thoughtful construction, inspired by the designer's need for a practical solution during Edmonton's harsh winters. The cowl is worked using both flat and in-the-round knitting techniques, offering versatility in construction methods.

What is Being Made

A knitted cowl—a tubular neck accessory that provides layered warmth around the neck and shoulders. This particular design addresses the challenge of keeping warm during winter walks while maintaining mobility and comfort. The finished cowl offers protection from cold breezes without the bulk of a traditional scarf.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Circular knitting: The pattern utilizes a 16-inch circular needle, enabling seamless in-the-round construction
  • Flat knitting: The pattern also accommodates working flat, providing flexibility for knitters with different equipment preferences
  • Cable work: A cable needle is required, indicating the inclusion of textured cable stitches that add visual interest and structure to the cowl
  • Stitch markers: Three stitch markers help track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the project

Stitches and Stitch Details

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the inclusion of a cable needle confirms that cable stitches are central to the Elwin design. These cables create dimensional texture and contribute to the cowl's structural integrity and visual appeal. The pattern achieves a gauge of 20 stitches by 26 rows over a 4-inch square in DK weight yarn, which is typical for cable-heavy designs that require slightly tighter gauge than stockinette.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

  • Yarn weight: DK (double knitting) weight
  • Yardage required: 250 yards (229 meters)
  • Suggested yarn: Log House Cottage Kid Lux Smooth in the Indigo colorway
  • Suggested yarn fiber content: 60% Merino wool, 35% Kid Mohair, 15% Nylon
  • Suggested yarn yardage: 270 yards (246 meters) per 2.5 ounces (100 grams)
  • Needle size: US 5 (3.75 mm) 16-inch circular needle, or size required to obtain the specified gauge
  • Additional tools: Tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with cable techniques, circular needle construction, and reading pattern repeats. The combination of working in the round and managing cable stitches makes this suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle textured stitch work.

Yarn Fiber Benefits

The suggested Log House Cottage Kid Lux Smooth yarn combines premium fibers ideal for a winter cowl. Merino wool provides warmth and elasticity, Kid Mohair adds luxurious softness and a subtle halo effect, while Nylon contributes durability and stitch definition. This blend creates a fabric that is both cozy and refined, perfect for a garment worn close to the face and neck.
