Product Description

Here is my Elvis Elephant knitting pattern. This is the latest pattern from my madmicroknits range. All the patterns in this series are knitted in microknit format using no 8 perle cotton on needles any size between 1.00 and 1.50 mm, depending on how daring you are feeling. For Elvis I chose size 1.2 mm needles and he is just 4 inches (ie 10 cm) high.Obviously Elvis will be slightly bigger if you choose a larger needle size and slightly smaller if you choose a smaller needle size. You can buy this pattern on Ebay, Etsy or from my website www.madmonkeyknits.com but if he is too small for you a huge Superfast version and a normal size version will also be released in the next few days. Thanks for looking.

Elvis Elephant Micro Knitting Pattern by madmonkeyknits

What is Being Made

Elvis Elephant is a micro knitted toy designed by madmonkeyknits as part of their MadMicroKnits collection (Pattern No. 10). This is a small-scale stuffed elephant toy measuring 10 cm in height and 13 cm in length, created using thread-weight yarn and miniature knitting needles. The finished toy features safety eyes and is intended as a decorative or collectible knitted figure.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques adapted for micro-scale work. The pattern uses increases and decreases to shape the three-dimensional form of the elephant. Construction begins with casting on a small number of stitches and strategically increasing stitches to build out the head and body sections. The pattern utilizes stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) as the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, even surface suitable for a toy. Shaping is achieved through distributed increases across rows, allowing the knitter to form rounded, organic shapes characteristic of a stuffed animal. The toy is assembled by knitting separate components and joining them together, with safety eyes inserted during or after construction.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl stitch (p) – used in alternation to create stocking stitch
  • Increase (inc) – knitting or purling into both the front and back of a single stitch to add extra stitches for shaping
  • Decrease (dec) – knitting or purling two stitches together to reduce stitch count
  • Slip stitch (sl) – slipping stitches onto the other needle for joining or shaping
  • Yarn forward (YF) and yarn back (YB) – yarn positioning techniques for creating texture or shaping
  • Stocking stitch (st.st) – the primary fabric created by alternating knit rows with purl rows

Materials Required

The Elvis Elephant pattern calls for No. 8 perle cotton thread in three colors: 2 balls or reels of grey (approximately 10 g or 12 g each), plus small amounts of white and cream for details. Perle cotton is a twisted, lustrous thread ideal for micro knitting projects, offering excellent stitch definition at small scales.

Needles required are 1.2 mm knitting needles, though the pattern notes flexibility: any needle size from 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm may be substituted, with the understanding that the finished elephant's size will vary slightly depending on needle choice. This flexibility allows knitters to adjust the final toy size within a small range.

Additional materials include 30 g safety toy stuffing for filling the completed knitted form and 6 mm brown safety eyes for the elephant's face. The pattern includes a safety note indicating that while safety measures are incorporated, this toy is not recommended for very young children.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the stitches themselves are fundamental, the combination of working with thread-weight yarn, extremely small needles, and precise shaping increases the technical challenge. Knitters should have solid foundational skills in basic stitches and shaping techniques before attempting this micro-scale project.
